Men's Heavyweight Rowing

Heavyweights Place 14th as a Team at IRA National Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Navy heavyweight team's first varsity boat placed fourth in the C final Sunday the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.  The Mids as a team finished in 14th place out of 24 teams in the Ten Eyck tabulation with 131 points.

Also on Sunday, Navy's second varsity boat finished in second place in the C final and the third varsity boat earned a fifth-place showing in the petite final.

"We didn't have the regatta we wanted," said Rob Friedrich, the Tom & Candy Knudson Director of Navy Rowing, "but I am very proud of the team's commitment to find speed throughout the season.

"We placed 14th as a team, which was better than our seeding.  We wanted to improve upon that, for sure, but we were right in the mix with many of our rivals.  We have a young team who learned a lot throughout the season.  We will be faster next year and are excited to get back to work and keep developing this great group of athletes."

The team's varsity four entry placed fifth in the grand final on Saturday.

"Our varsity four had a great showing in making the grand final and racing in second place for the middle 1,000 meters," said Friedrich.  "A job well done for seniors Aidan Leavy and Mark Ostrowski, junior Ethan Barton and walk-on freshmen Nate Pawlowicz and Ursi Wise."

First Varsity Eight
Navy advanced to the C final with its victory in Saturday's C/D semifinal.

Sunday, the six boats in the final were bunched together after 500 meters as less than three seconds separated the lead boat from the last.  It remained tight after an additional 500 meters as Wisconsin was in the lead in a time of 2:49.780 and Navy was in fourth place with an effort of 2:51.960.  There was some separation from Boston U.'s first-place boat (4:17.354) after 1,500 meters, but that left Drexel (4:19.821), Wisconsin (4:20.500) and Navy (4:21.175) in a battle for second place.

The Terriers would win the race in a time of 5:44.166, the Dragons finished in second place with a time of 5:45.316, the Badgers followed in third place with their clocking of 5:46.090 and the Mids crossed the line in fourth place with an effort of 5:46.906.

Second Varsity Eight
The Mids earned a spot in the C final after placing second in Saturday's C/D semifinal.

In today's race, Stanford took an early lead of nearly two seconds (1:25.864) on Navy (1:27.474) and Wisconsin (1:27.899) after 500 meters, with those three teams building a decent advantage over the rest of the field.  The Cardinal maintained their early lead (2:54.62) at the midpoint of the race, with the Badgers (2:56.240) overtaking the Mids (2:58.500) for second place.  Those three teams held their respective places at the 1,500-meter mark, with Stanford (4:26.625) leading Wisconsin (4:29.222) by just under three seconds and the Badgers in front of Navy (4:29.638) by just four-tenths of a second.

Navy would surge past Wisconsin by almost two seconds (1:28.763 to 1:30.547) the final 500 meters to earn second place.  Stanford won the race in a time of 5:56.739, Navy followed with an overall clocking of 5:58.401 and Wisconsin earned third place with its effort of 5:59.769.

Third Varsity Eight
The third varsity eight placed sixth in Saturday's A/B semifinal to qualify for today's petite final.

A slow start hurt the Mids in today's petite final.  Navy's opening 500-meter time of 1:28.547 had the Mids in sixth place, more than one second in back of the fifth-place boat.  Navy rebounded in the next quarter of the course as its time of 1:30.133 was the second-fastest effort in that section.  That pulled the Mids into fourth place (2:58.680) and within striking range of third-place Boston U. (2:57.530).  Navy dropped into fifth place with just 500 meters remaining and could not climb higher than that by the finish line.

The Mids traversed the course in an overall time of 6:02.170.

Princeton won the race with a time of 5:51.680.
