WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Navy lightweight rowing team's first varsity boat placed fourth in the grand final Sunday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. The second varsity eight boat also placed fourth in its final and the Mids as a team finished in a tie for third place out of eight teams in the points standings.
Saturday saw Navy's varsity four boat place fifth in its grand final.
First Varsity Eight
Navy qualified for the grand final with its second-place showing in Friday's semifinal.
The Mids stood in third place after 500 meters of Sunday's grand final. Harvard led the pack with a time of 1:23.157, Princeton was breathing down the necks of the Crimson at 1:23.177 and the Mids were in third with a time of 1:24.389. The Tigers took over the lead at the 1,000-meter mark (2:48.860), with Harvard now in second (2:50.260) by a scant three-tenths of a second over the Mids (2:50.570). Princeton (4:14.203), Harvard (4:15.863) and Navy (4:17.298) held their respective spots over the third 500 meters of the course.
The Tigers crossed the line in a winning time of 5:41.021 and the Crimson earned the silver medal with their clocking of 5:42.883. Penn, which was in fifth place after both 500 and 1,000 meters and was in fourth place after 1,500 meters, recorded a closing 500-meter time that was nearly three seconds faster than any other entry in the final section of the course and was the second-fastest 500 meters in any segment of the race to surge past Navy for the bronze medal. The Quakers posted an overall time of 5:44.033 to edge the Mids and their clocking of 5:44.447.
Second Varsity Eight
There were seven entries in the field and all competed on Friday in a heat to determine lane assignments for today's final. The Mids placed sixth on Friday.
Not much water separated the majority of the seven boats after the opening 500 meters as Cornell led the field in a time of 1:24.870 and Dartmouth was in sixth place with a clocking of 1:26.580. Navy was in fourth place at the first time check (1:26.080). The boats remained bunched together at the middle of the race with just over two seconds separating first place (Harvard (2:54.380) from fifth (Cornell, 2:56.880).
The Mids were solidly in fourth place (over two second behind Yale and nearly two seconds in front of Cornell) after the ensuing 500 meters and didn't gain or lose any water in the final section of the course. Navy traversed the 2,000 meters in a time of 5:54.760.
Princeton won the race with its time of 5:48.970, Harvard placed second with a clocking of 5:51.450 and Yale claimed third place with an effort of 5:52.440.
