ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy rising senior
Sasha Panyan (Lutherville, Md.) has been ranked 20th in singles in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for the Atlantic Region that were released today. The 2023 Patriot League Player of the Year also been selected to serve as the captain of the 2023-24 Navy men's tennis team.
In addition to earning the league's player-of-the-year nod, Panyan also was tabbed as the MVP of the 2023 league tournament and was named the sport's scholar-athlete of the year this spring. Along with his 2021 league rookie-of-the-year award, Panyan is the third Navy men's tennis player and fourth men's or women's player in league history to have won all of the league's major individual awards in a career.
Panyan posted records of 23-9 in singles and 26-9 in doubles during his 2022-23 campaign. Those overall marks included records of 16-6 at No. 1 singles and 22-4 at No. 1 doubles during the team's spring dual match season. His career records now stand at 50-19 in singles and 54-24 in doubles. Additionally, he is a combined 35-4 in dual matches against league opponents.
This is the eighth time a Mid has earned a regional ranking since 1989. The most recent Mids to do so was Andrew Ton (19th) in 2021.
Panyan is one of 10 returning letter winners from Navy's 2022-23 team that won the program's fifth-straight league title.
