UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Navy women's golf team placed ninth out of 10 teams on Sunday at the Nittany Lion Invitational, wrapping up the two-day tournament hosted by Penn State University.
Playing on the par-72, 6,402-yard Penn State Blue Course, the Midshipmen shot a weekend-low 301 score in the first round and followed it with a 308 in Saturday's second round, closing out the event with a 316 round over the final 18 holes on Sunday to finish with a tournament score of 61-over par 925 that was 10 strokes behind eighth-place Eastern Kentucky.
Boston College took the team title with a 13-over par 877 score while James Madison posted a runner-up score of 18-over par 882. Madison Smithco of Youngstown State used a 5-under par 67 in the first to grab individual medalist honors with a weekend total of 6-under par 210, beating out Richmond's Hannah Lydic (4-under par 212).
Opening the event with an even-par 72 first round, senior captain
Mara Hirtle then posted rounds of 77-77 to end the weekend at 10-over par 226, while freshman
Keira Howard matched Hirtle's final score of 10-over par 226 with rounds of 78-74-74 as the Navy duo finished in a seven-way tie for 18th place.
Shooting rounds of 76-79-82, senior
Stephanie Lee wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 44th at 21-over par 237, while sophomore
Sue Lee was 50th on the leaderboard with a 25-over par 241 (75-78-88).
Rounding out the Navy lineup was junior
Bridget Hoang in 53rd, who shot a 30-over par 246 with rounds of 83-80-83.
Navy returns to action on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, hosting the Navy Fall Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
