ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Hosting its first home event of the season, the Navy women's golf team battled Maryland in a close match-play event Saturday morning but were unable to prevail, as the Midshipmen were bested by the Terrapins, 4.5-3.5, at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.
Playing a modified match-play event with eight singles matches on the par-72, 6,084-yard course, the Mids jockeyed early with their guests before the Terps pulled in front late despite seniors
Emma Tang and
Keira Howard and freshman
Jamison Louie winning their singles matches.
Tang started the morning by defeating Chanayu Chowiwattana, 2-up, but Maryland evened the score when Nicha Kanpai posted a 5&4 win over junior
Vivian Cressman. Howard then edged out Anna Pillard, 2&1, but Carolina Perez Tasso beat junior
Megan Kirkpatrick in a 5&4 match to split the grouping.
In the third group, Louie notched a 2-up victory against Noa Zocco while sophomore
Iliana Rubio was knocked off by Noa Terroba Toro in a 7&6 match to split their group as well and bring the team score to 3-3.
Coming down to the last four golfers, sophomore
Malerie Lague and Emily McKee tied to keep the match even, but Julia Garcia then battled past senior captain
Una Johnson, 4&3, in the final singles match to give the Terps the team victory.
Navy will continue its fall slate on Monday and Tuesday with the Autumn Harvest tournament in Lopatcong, N.J.
