MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Navy's
Aniketh Ayinala and
Nathan Nguyen finished play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Saturday.
"It was a great opportunity for our guys to be part of this year's Milwaukee Tennis Classic," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland, who was with the team. Â "We were able to play several Big 10 teams as well as SMU. Â We always face some of the best competition of the season at this prestigious tournament and the experience is invaluable."
In doubles on Friday, the Mids lost to the tournament's fourth-seeded tandem of Louis Cloud and Maks Silagy by the score of 6-1 in the first round (16 teams). Â Both Navy players then lost close first round singles matches (32 players). Â Wisconsin's Michael Minasyan defeated Ayinala, 7-5, 6-4, and Michigan State's Max Sheldon recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nguyen. Â
The first round of the 16-player consolation draw saw both players drop straight-set matches. Â
"Aniketh and Nathan played solid on Friday against tough competition," said Moreland. Â "We were not able to capitalize on a couple of deuce point opportunities in doubles, and that was the difference in the match. Â In singles, Aniketh and Nathan each had chances in their opening singles matches. Â Aniketh got out to leads in both sets. Â His opponent did a really good job of fighting back and in the end it was a few key points late in both sets that separated them. Â Nathan's first round match would follow a similar arc and the experience of his Big 10 opponent was the difference in those pivotal points."
Nguyen then posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wisconsin's Collin Buduhn in a second-round match on Saturday before falling, 6-4, 6-4 to Buduhn's Wisconsin teammate Gabriel Hunter. Â
"Nathan was able to bounce back this morning against a good Wisconsin player," said Moreland. Â "After a back-and-forth start to the match he was able to dominate and get the win. Â In his second match, he was solid but unable to repeat his play. Â
"Aniketh had a great battle today against a very talented Maks Silagy of SMU. Â The points were long and physical and he would lose a hard-fought first set. Â It would be more of the same in the second set. Â He would go back-and-forth until taking a 5-4 lead. Â A tough couple of games followed and he would eventually fall, 7-5."
Navy's fall season continues Oct. 6-8 when it tales part in the Richmond Invite. Â
