ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team battled through a rain-soaked weekend to finish second for the Intrepid Trophy on Sunday in Annapolis, Md.
Â
Serving as the MAISA Match Race Championship, Navy hosted the Intrepid Trophy as racing was held in the Midshipmen's fleet of Colgate 26 boats. Saturday proved too windy to sail all day, so the entire regatta took place on Sunday.
Â
Racing began in a nice southeasterly breeze and Navy won its first two races to advance to the semifinal in the afternoon, where Navy squared off against SUNY Maritime and won the first two races to advance to the finals against Georgetown.
Â
In the first match of the finals, Navy won the start but picked up a penalty in the process and Georgetown took the lead on the first leg as the Mids killed their penalty. Trailing at the gate, Navy split with Georgetown and found better wind on the second upwind leg to retake the lead. With Navy ahead on a direct line to the finish, the Hoyas caught a generous puff and slid past just before the finish to claim the race. The second finals race saw Georgetown win the start and lead around the first lap, but Navy again split on the second upwind and again took the lead, one it would hold onto until the finish to tie the finals at 1-1. The deciding match was close at the start, but Georgetown was able to work over the top shortly after the gun before opening up a commanding lead that the Hoyas held to the finish.
Â
Navy had a second competition scheduled for the weekend, but the Top Nine Regatta in Kings Point, N.Y. was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
Â
Navy is back in action on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship in Kings Point, the Danmark Trophy in New London, Conn., and the first round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships in Annapolis.
