ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team opens its spring season this weekend with two days of competition. The Mids (0-0) first will travel to Philadelphia on Friday to face Penn (1-1) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the school's Hecht Tennis Center. Navy then will play host to a pair of matches Saturday in the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids are slated to play St. Bonaventure (1-1) at noon and Saint Francis U. (0-0) at 6 p.m.
Navy Update
J.J. Etterbeek led Navy in singles wins during the fall season with a 10-2 record. Close behind him were
Herrick Legaspi with a 9-3 record and
Matthew McNair with a mark of 8-2.
Navy used 22 different doubles teams over the course of the invitational portion of the season. The tandem of
Graydon Buckingham and
Eric Liu and the team of
Jason Kim and
Steve Nguyen each compiled 4-4 records. Meanwhile, the duo of
Luke Garner and
Sasha Panyan ended the fall with a 3-3 record.
An additional three teams posted 3-0 records.
Penn Preview
The Quakers opened their season by splitting two matches last weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. Penn lost a 7-0 decision to sixth-ranked Tennessee and defeated Furman by the score of 4-0.
Penn compiled a 13-9 overall record last season and posted a 5-2 record in Ivy League play. The Quakers tallied a 2-6 record when facing nationally-ranked teams a year ago.
Penn defeated Navy, 7-0, last year in Philadelphia to take a 61-34-1 lead in the all-time series between the teams.
St. Bonaventure Preview
The Bonnies split a pair of 4-3 decisions during the fall season, losing to Le Moyne and defeating Niagara.
St. Bonaventure ended last season with a 10-10 overall record and a 2-3 record in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Navy won a 5-2 decision over the Bonnies last season and now hold an advantage of 9-1 in the all-time series.
Saint Francis U. Preview
The Red Flash will be opening their season with their match against the Mids.
Saint Francis U. compiled a 5-14 record last year and ended Northeast Conference play with a 1-2 record.
Included among the team's results from a year ago was a 7-0 loss to Navy. That result gave the Mids a 9-1 edge in the series between the teams.
