NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Navy men's rugby team (7-0, 4-0 Rugby East) extends it Rugby East conference win streak to 20-straight after it defeated Walsh (2-4, 0-3 Rugby East), 40-11, on Saturday afternoon.
"We knew this would be a tough test on the road for us and it certainly was," said director of rugby Gavin Hickie. "We are very happy to leave Walsh with a bonus point victory."
It was a tight scoring first half between the two teams with strong defense through the first nine minutes of the match. The Mids took advantage of a Cavaliers penalty and turned to junior Roanin Krieger for a penalty kick attempt. The Placerville, Calif., native drilled his 12th penalty kick of the season through the uprights in the 10th minute for an early 3-0 lead.
Walsh wasted no time to put points up on the board when it spiked its lone try of the match in the 13th minute to take the lead, 5-3.
The Cavilers led for four minutes as Navy capitalized off a second penalty in the 17th minute and as Krieger boots his second penalty kick. Walsh's defense held strong for 13-minutes but the Midshipmen constant offensive attack inside its 22-meter zone was too much. Senior captain William Webb slammed down Navy's first scored the match at the 30th minute, his third score of the season to extend the lead, 13-5.
Krieger would add on to his big first half with the third penalty kick to send the Mids into halftime with a 16-8 lead.
The Cavaliers continued to fight hard with a penalty kick to make the score a one possession game at the 49th minute to make the score 16-11.
From there it was all Navy with an additional penalty kick for Krieger – his fourth of the match – and three-straight tries. In the 62nd minute, junior wing Max Smith scored his first try of the season as the Mids began to run away with the match to make the score 26-11.
Sophomore Andrew Baublitz scored a pair of tries to add on to his team leading in scores (11). Baublitz' first try came in the 72nd minute mark then added the teams bonus point fourth try of the match in the 81st minute.
