Women’s Rugby Falls on the Road to Sacred Heart

Fairfield, Conn. – The Navy women's rugby team (3-3, 1-3) second half efforts was not enough as it falls on the road to Sacred Heart (2-3-1, 2-3) on Saturday afternoon, 53-19.

"I was proud of the fight in the team today, especially in the second half," remarked head coach Murph McCarthy. "We had too many penalties overall and made some mental mistakes that costed us."

Sacred Heart quickly opened the scoring just under a minute into play to take an early 7-0 lead. The Pioneers continued to find the try zone three more times throughout the first half plus a penalty kick to take a 31-0 halftime lead.

Despite the score in the first half, the Midshipmen defense continued to fight hard in a span of 17 minutes allowing no points before gifting Sacred Heart a penalty that lead to three points.

Navy was able to get on the board first in the second with a pair of tries from senior captain Maggie Geiger in the 47th and 65th minute. Ella Callahan picked up her second score of the season in the 77th minute.

Sacred Heart continued its offensive aggression as it added on three more tries and a second penalty kick.

A tough test is up ahead for the Midshipmen when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on the defending NIRA 15's national champions Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 26. The match is slated for a noon kickoff.
