ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Army scored the last three points of the opening set to win the frame and seize momentum it maintained through the remainder of a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19) victory by the Black Knights (10-10, 6-5) over the Navy volleyball team (4-16, 4-7), Saturday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.
"First of all, we played in front of an amazing atmosphere tonight," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "Every volleyball team in the country would be envious of having a supportive and energetic crowd behind them as we did this evening. A big thanks on behalf of our program to the Mids, the other Navy teams, their coaches and all of our additional fans for their support. We loved sharing the match with them.
"As for the match, I think if we made a couple of plays late in set one and win it, the story would have been different for the rest of the match."
Set One
The score would be tied 10 times and the lead change hands on four occasions.
The score was tied at 10-10 when Army went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. Navy pulled to within one point at 18-17 and 19-18 but soon found itself trailing 22-19. Three-straight kills by the Mids tied the score at 22-22. Army scored on a kill to regain the lead, then
Ava Toppin posted back-to-back kills to take Navy to set point with a 24-23 lead. Army recorded back-to-back kills to reach set point, then a block by the Black Knights gave them the set.
Set Two
Each team held slim leads through the first two-thirds of the set, then Army went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage.
Set Three
The score was tied at 4-4 when a 6-0 run by the Black Knights gave them a 10-4 advantage. The margin over the remainder of the set would be at least four points.
Inside the Numbers
Army held just a 44-37 lead in kills, but the Black Knights had a more pronounced advantage in hitting percentage of .206-.157. That was due in part to Army leading 11-4 in blocks, as well a 6-0 in service aces.
Farrah Eike led the Navy offense with 10 kills on 29 attempts with a .241 hitting percentage.
Anuhea Hauanio-Lore and
Hannah Hoover paced the defense with 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
"Farrah continues to put up some really solid kill percentages," said Labrador. "Army stressed our serve receive. Anu and Hannah did a great job of passing the entire court."
