ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The fall slate of tournaments for the Navy men's tennis team continued this weekend as the Mids played in the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic and the River City Tennis Open in Richmond, Va.
San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic
The Mids faced players from Grand Canyon, UC Irvine and Oregon during the three-day tournament held at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on the San Diego campus.
"This is definitely one of if not the best fall events in the country to play in," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "The amount of care and time the committee puts into the event is incredible."
Navy's doubles teams played well throughout the event as the Mids finished with a 4-2 record. Leading the way was the team of
Luke Garner and Steven Nguyen which recorded a pair of victories. The Mids tallied 6-4 wins over the UCI tandem of Sohrob Amiryavari and Rithvik Krishna, as well as the Oregon pairing of Matt Burton and Paris Pouatcha.
Navy's team of
Herrick Legaspi and
Steve Nguyen defeated Grand Canyon's Andreas Loizas and Finbar McGarvey, while Legaspi and
Tommy Kim registered a 6-4 victory over UCI's Max Fardanesh and Ruining Huang.
Nguyen also defeat Huang, 6-3, 6-3, in singles.
River City Tennis Open
A larger portion of the Navy team traveled to Richmond, Va. Navy competed against players from Richmond, James Madison, VCU, Hampton, Georgetown, Longwood and Bucknell.
Winning both singles and doubles matches for the Mids were
George Cutone and
Charlie Spencer. In doubles, the pair recorded a 7-6 (7-3) win over the James Madison team of Markus Giersiepen and Edson Sanchez. In singles, Cutone defeat Georgetown's Akira Morgenstern, 6-4, 6-1, and Spencer tallied a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hampton's Marko Stoilkovski.

The Mids will send several players to the ITA Atlantic Region Championship starting Thursday, with the remainder of the team remaining in Annapolis for the Navy Blue Invite which starts Friday.
