AKRON, Ohio – The No. 12 Navy rifle team (10-4, 3-1 GARC) registered a solid weekend in Ohio as the Midshipmen picked up four victories. The Mids opened the weekend with a season-high score of 4716 to defeat No. 7 Nebraska (4708 points) and No. 9 Ohio State (4685) in Columbus. On Saturday, Navy continued the stellar weekend with a new season-best of 4717 points to defeat match-host and No. 14 Akron (4707) and the Huskers (4710).
"Our team had a great weekend," head coach
Mike Anti stated of the weekend. "We won every match, but even more important, we posted our season high scores both days. We were able to replace two of our NCAA qualifying scores with higher scores to increase our season average. We are now currently ranked 10th and just a few points out of a top-8 ranking.
"Our smallbore shooting was very strong this weekend with a number of outstanding performances. On Saturday,
Marleigh Duncan shot an outstanding season high of 590. Her performance was backed up by
Isabella Baldwin,
Stephanie Milvain and
Ryan Wee all with 585s. During the air rifle event on Saturday, Isabella dominated the match with a score of 598, matching her personal best.
"On Sunday against Akron and Nebraska, we continued shooting high scores in the smallbore event. Two of our athletes, Isabella and Stephanie firing world class 590s. That score was a career best for Stephanie. I am very proud of our team's performance this weekend.
"Everyone on the traveling team performed at or above their average. It is hard to ask for anything more. I also feel that
Parker Haydin,
Catherine Dely, Josh Potts, and
Devin Uhrich had some break through performances that will pay off when we go against Army in the second half of the season."
Navy resumes action in January when the Midshipmen travel to Morgantown, W.Va. for a match with top-ranked West Virginia.
Recap Day 1: #12 Navy 4716, #7 Nebraska 4708, #9 Ohio State 4685
On the first day of competition over the weekend, Navy posted a season-high team score of 4716 to finish first among the three teams competing – Nebraska (4708 points) and Ohio State (4685). The aggregate total for the Mids tied for the fifth-best performance in program history, while the smallbore tally also ranked fifth in school history.
Isabella Baldwin led the team with an 1183, which tied for the sophomore's second-best performance of the season. She notched a total of 585 in smallbore, while tying a career-high with a 598 in air rifle. It was the third consecutive match with a 598 in air rifle for Baldwin.
Marleigh Duncan posted a consistent day on Saturday. She shot a season-high tally of 590 in smallbore, while finishing air rifle with a score of 591 to register a combined score of 1181, which was a season-high for the senior.
Stephanie Milvain and
Parker Haydin followed with aggregate scores of 1174 and 1171, respectively. Milvain tied a season-high smallbore tally of 585 to go along with a score of 589 in air rifle for her top season performance of 1174. Haydin recorded scores of 578 in smallbore and 593 in air rifle for his 1171.
Ryan Wee,
Catherine Dely, and
Joshua Potts each carded final scorecards in the 1160s. Wee notched an 1163, while Dely was one point back with an 1162. Potts registered a combined score of 1160. Wee turned in scores of 585 (smallbore) and 578 (air rifle), while Dely finished with a 578 (smallbore) and 584 (air rifle) with Potts notching scores of 575 (smallbore) and 585 (air rifle).
Devin Uhrich rounded out the scoring posting tallies of 564 (smallbore), 581 (air rifle), and 1145 (aggregate).
Recap Day 2: #12 Navy 4717, #7 Nebraska 4710, #14 Akron 4707
On Sunday, Navy set a new season-high score by one point, turning in a team score of 4717. The score topped match-host Akron (4707) and Nebraska (4710) to sweep the weekend. The 4717 replaced Saturday's total of 4716 as the fifth-best performance in school history. The Midshipmen tallied a smallbore tally of 2349 and an air rifle score of 2368. The smallbore score was the third-best in program history.
Baldwin once again led the Mids on the second day of competition. She tied a season- and career-high with 1186 points aggregate, turning in a season-best score of 590 in smallbore to go along with a 596 in air rifle.
Duncan, Milvain, and Haydin all recorded aggregate scores in the 1170s.
Duncan finished two-points back of her Saturday total with an 1179, carding scores of 587 (smallbore) and 592 (aggregate).
Milvain topped her season-high total that she tied on Saturday with a new career-best performance of 1178. The senior team captain registered a season-high 590 in smallbore to go along with a 588 in air rifle for her new season and career high of 1178.
Haydin recorded performances of 582 (smallbore) and 592 (air rifle) for an 1174 (aggregate) on the day.
Potts rounded out the aggregate scoring for the Midshipmen on Sunday. The senior posted scores of 578 (smallbore), 588 (air rifle), and 1166 (aggregate). The smallbore and aggregate tallies for Potts were season best performances.
Wee, Dely, Uhrich all competed in smallbore only at Akron. Wee posted a 579 with Dely carding a 577 and Uhrich notching a 575.
