Wrestling Wrapped Up Opening Weekend at the Clarion Open on Sunday

CLARION, Pa. – The Navy wrestling team (0-1) completed its first open event of the 2024-25 season at the Clarion Open on Sunday in Clarion, Pa. Sophomore Daniel Williams (184 / Orlando, Fla.) led all Midshipmen as he finished third in his respective weight class.

Williams finished the tournament 4-1 after he defeated unrostered Carson Thomas by an 11-5 decision in the third-place bout. Williams opened his day against fourth-seeded Bucknell's Michael Bush, Williams went into the third period with a 4-1 lead and his takedown with under a minute left was the determining factor in the 7-6 victory. Williams dominated his round of 16 match against unrostered Nathan Campbell 18-2 to advance to the quarterfinals where he met Buffalo's fifth-seeded Marcus Petite. Williams controlled the match with a pair of takedowns, an escape and didn't get taken down in the 7-4 victory. Williams' lone loss came to top-seeded Rocco Welsh (Unattached / Ohio State) in the semifinals, 13-3.

In addition to Williams deep run, a trio of Midshipmen – Cael Crebs (184), Sammy Star (174) and Nicholas Vafiadis (149) – also had strong showings with appearances in the quarterfinals.

Crebs started his day 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals in commanding fashion with a 6-1 decision victory over Ohio State's Gavin Bell. In the round of 16, Crebs dominated Buffalo's Connor Scuilla, 17-2. The Montoursville, Pa., native would drop his next two bouts by falls to end his day.

Star received a bye to open the tournament, he defeated Clarion's Deegan Ross 9-4 in the second round before losing two close matches to unrosterd Mario Hutcherson (4-2) in the quarterfinals and Edinboro's Brody Evans (4-1).

Vafiadis opened his day with a major decision victory over Pittsburgh's Connor Swaim (15-2) and defeated Buffalo's Sam Ewing 7-2 to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. The Quinton, Va., native would face against top-seeded Dylan D'emilio out of Ohio State, where he loss by major decision, 15-3. The sophomore's day was ended in the consolation round where he fell to Ohio State's Landon Desselle in the first round.

The Mids compete in Annapolis for the first-time next Saturday in the Navy Tri Meet at Alumni Hall. Navy will face Drexel (1:30 p.m.) and North Carolina (3 p.m.).
