EMMITSBURG, Md. – Sophomore Meagan Alvarez' 21 total points led the way for the Navy women's rugby team (4-5, 2-5 in the NIRA) in the victory over Mount St. Mary's (0-8, 0-7 in the NIRA), 36-14, to conclude its fall 15s season on the road at Emmitsburg.
"It's great to finish the season on a high note today. We defended well and had many players step up," said head coach Murph McCarthy. "I'm so proud of our older players that have led the team this fall."
Senior team captains Miracle Haynes and Maggie Geiger scored the first two tries of the match to give the Mids a 12-0 lead. Haynes broke the 0-0 deadlock in the seventh minute with her fourth try of the season to make the score, 5-0.
After 25 minutes of back and forth action, Geiger found a gap through the defense for her fourth try of the season in the 32nd minute.
Alvarez would run in her first of three tries on the day in the 36th minute as the Mids jumped out to a big 19-0 lead.
The Mountaineers added their first try in the final minutes of the first half in the 38th minute to go into halftime trailing, 19-7.
Navy tacked on three more tries in the second half with a pair coming from Alvarez in the 61st and 74th minute. Haynes ran in the final Midshipmen try in the 83rd minute to end the game.
Mount St. Mary's final try of the match was in the 67th minute.
Alvarez and Haynes ended the fall season tied for the most tries on the team (5). Alvarez' 52 total points marked the most out of all Mids. Sophomore center Mia Young was Navy's top kicker as she led the team with 13 conversion kicks.
