CLERMONT, Fla. – The Navy women's triathlon team concluded its season with an 11th-place finish out of 14 teams at the NCAA Championship on Saturday at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Fla.
"The team executed individually as expected which is great on this stage. The race has gotten extremely fast and our athletes got into good bike packs and rode aggressively," stated head coach Billy Edwards. "I am proud of the plebes for their tenacity on this big stage. They learned a ton this year. Emely [Vela] performed awesome in her last event for the Navy women's triathlon team, I'm glad she could end her Navy career in the A Heat at Nationals."
The race consisted of a 750m swim, 20km bike and a 5k run. A total of 194 athletes from 37 programs took part in the national championship.
Arizona won the national title with a team score 942. Arizona State's Naomi Ruff placed first individually with a time of 59:08.
Freshmen Natalie Wang and Dylan Cashin has led the Midshipmen all season and was no different on the biggest stage. Wang clocked in a time of 1:04:16 to finish 60th overall. She began the competition with a strong swim (10:39) and bike (31:44). She finished the race with a time of 20:16.
Cashin finished 17 spots behind Wang with a time of 1:06:02 to finish in 77th overall. She posted the fastest swim time of all Mids (10:31) before finishing the race off with a 31:46 bike and 22:01 run times.
Senior team captain Emely Vela had the third-best placement for the Midshipmen. She finished in 93rd with a time of 1:07:46. The Chester, Md., native posted the second-fastest 5k run for Navy with a time of 20:41. She also recorded a 10:44 swim and a 34:38 bike.
Sophomore MC Kistler finished her day with an overall time of 1:17:00.
