CORALVILLE, Iowa – Senior team captain Josh Koderhandt (141) and sophomore Danny Wask (174) led the Navy wrestling team with podium finishes at the Soldier Salute in Coralville, Iowa, on Monday. Koderhandt capped off the two-day event going 4-0 winning his respective weight class and named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.
After drawing a bye in the opening round, Koderhandt began his day in the round of eight where he met Northern Iowa's Carter Freeman. Koderhandt held a 4-0 lead before ending the match in the second period pinning Freeman. In the quarterfinals, Koderhandt was in a low scoring match against Iowa's Cullan Schriever. Koderhandt went into the third period with a slim 1-0 lead where he controlled the round but Freeman escaped Koderhandt's grasp to send the bout into sudden victory. The Belleville, Ill., native secured his ticket to the semifinals with a takedown in the final minute.
Koderhandt kicked off day the second day with his fourth fall victory this season in the semifinals over South Dakota State's Julian Tagg. In the finals, Koderhandt met No. 7 Vance Vombaur where he earned his second ranked victory this season in a low scoring match, 4-2. It was Koderhandt's first tournament title this season.
With a bye in the opening round, Danny Wask started his day in the round of eight against Missouri's Jake Stoffel. Wask controlled the match to earn a 16-6 major decision victory and advanced to the quarterfinals. The Wantage, N.J., native was in a back-and-forth battle against North Dakota State's Daniel Magayna where Wask escaped with an 11-10 victory.
Wask opened day two with a ranked victory over No. 15 Northern Iowa's Jared Simma, 3-1. Wask's run would come to an end in the finals where he fell to Iowa's Patrick Kennedy, 6-2.
