ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams head to West Point, N.Y., for the annual Star Meet against Army Thursday in Crandall Pool. The diving events start at 3:15 p.m. and the swimming events begin at 5:15 p.m.
ESPN+ will provide a video stream of the entire meet.
The meet is part of the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA.
The Navy women's team has posted a 7-3 record this season and Army enters the meet with a 7-1 record. On the men's side, the Mids have posted an 8-2 record and the Black Knights have totaled a 5-1 mark.
Last year saw the Navy women's team record a 162-138 victory over Army to win the meet for the 35th year in a row and the Navy men's team post a 153-147 victory to defeat the Black Knights for the 32nd time in 33 seasons. Both outcomes were not determined until the conclusion of the final event, the 400 free relay.
It was the closest women's meet since Navy won a 151-149 decision in 2000 and the closest men's meet since Navy defeated Army 125-118 in 1993. The latter men's meet was when the teams competed in only 13 events instead of the now standard 16.
Army and Navy split the 16 women's events contested on the day. The Mids won both relay races, the Black Knights won both diving events and each team won six individual swimming events.
Navy led from start to finish, but it was a precarious lead the entire night. It was not until the ninth event, the 200 backstroke, when the Mids pushed their advantage to 109-81 to have some breathing room. The Black Knights rallied and heading into the last event, the 400 free relay, Navy held a 149-136 lead. That meant the Mids had to have one of their four relay teams finish the race to win the meet. Instead of just finishing third, which would have given the Mids a two-point win (151-149), Navy placed first and third to account for the final score.
Navy returns
Ela Habjan and
Caroline Irwin, each of whom won two events last season in Lejeune Hall. Habjan placed first in both backstroke events and Irwin won the gold medal in each butterfly race. Navy's additional two event wins were recorded by 2024 graduate
Maya Novack in the sprint freestyle races.
Army brings back triple event winner Molly Webber (200 free, 500 free, 1000 free) along with diver Minh Donnell who won both boards. Aurielle Migault, who was a senior last season, matched Webber's performance with victories in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM races.
The 2024 men's meet saw the host Mids win nine events and the visiting Black Knights seven. The teams split the two relay races, Navy won both diving boards and each team won six individual swimming races.
The lead went back and forth the entire meet. There were six lead changes on the night with five occurring in a span of six events in the last half of the meet. Navy went into the 400 free relay with a 147-136 lead. That meant the Mids needed to have their top team finish no lower than second place to win the meet. A second-place showing would have given the Mids a 151-149 victory, but Navy placed both second and third in the race to accrue the 153 points.
Returning for Navy are
Ben Irwin, who won both backstroke races,
Blakeman Shaw, the winner of both diving events, and
Juan Mora, who won the 200 breast.
Patrick Colwell and
Jonah Harm were Navy's additional individual event winners a year ago. Colwell won both butterfly races and Harm won the 50 free. The two were part of Navy's Class of 2024.
Army brings back four event winners from last year's meet in Annapolis who totaled five event victories. Wes Tate won the 200 free and 500 free events, Kohnen Rankin won the 100 breast, Owen Harlow was the winner of the 100 free and Alex Edwards placed first in the 200 IM.
The Navy women's team leads the overall series with Army by the count of 39-4. This includes a 17-3 advantage in meets held at Army. The Mids defeated the Black Knights, 172.5-127.5, when the meet was held at West Point two years ago.
The Navy men also lead the series with Army, with the advantage being 56-30. The Mids have posted a 24-17 record in meets contested at Army. The Black Knights defeated the Mids, 189-111, two seasons ago in Crandall Pool.
