Four Mids Named NAAA Co-Athletes of the Week

Jia Anderson (women’s track and field), Joshua Boamah (men’s track and field), Marleigh Duncan (rifle), and Matthew Petros (gymnastics) were named NAAA Athletes of the Week.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – This week's Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete-of-the-Week Award, presented by Northrop Grumman, is shared by four Midshipmen. Earning the accolade are Jia Anderson, women's track and field; Joshua Boamah, men's track and field; Marleigh Duncan, rifle; and Matthew Petros, men's gymnastics.
 
The quartet helped Navy to a 4-0 record over the weekend in Star competitions over Army. With the four victories, the Midshipmen now lead the Black Knights, 9-6-1 in the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA. Navy's magic number to clinch the overall Star Series is four with 10 Star competitions remaining.
 
Jia Anderson, Women's Track and Field
Anderson contributed 13 points for the women's track and field team in its, 99-82, win over Army in the Indoor Star Meet. She began the dual by breaking her own school and meet record in the 60m hurdles with a winning time of 8.36. Anderson then won the 60m dash by breaking the school record with a time of 7.53. Anderson's final program record came in the 200m, as she placed second overall in the race with a time of 24.18.
 
Joshua Boamah, Men's Track and Field
Boamah helped lead the men's track and field team to a 103-78 victory against the Black Knights. The men's team captain recorded a school record in the shot put (18.71m / 61' 4.75") and weight throw (21.12m / 69' 3.5") to place first in both events. Boamah's effort resulted in 10 points for the Midshipmen.
 
Marleigh Duncan, Rifle
Duncan led all shooters at the Army-Navy Star Match, helping the Midshipmen to a school-record score in the current Army-Navy scoring format in their 5896-5863 win. Additionally, the Mids shot a school record in the NCAA scoring format, notching a team score of 4724. Duncan led the way, finishing as the top performer on the day with an aggregate score of 1184. In addition, the junior earned the Josh Watson Memorial Trophy for being the Midshipmen's top finisher for the third consecutive season. She was the top finisher in aggregate (1182) and smallbore (589), while finishing one point back of the top spot in air rifle (595).
 
Matthew Petros, Gymnastics
Petros led Navy to a 12.9-point victory over Army in Saturday's gymnastics Star Meet with a standout effort over four events. Individually, the sophomore recorded 53.6 points for the Mids from his combined pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar routines. Petros placed first on the p-bars with a score of 13.65, 0.15 points ahead of the runner-up, while tying for first on the vault with a 14.5. Additionally, he ranked third on the pommel horse with a 13.05 and sixth on the high bar with a 12.4 score.
