Rifle Continues Road Swing in Charleston, S.C.

Navy will face The Citadel and Georgia Southern on Saturday before taking on The Citadel on Sunday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team (6-9) is set to take part in a pair of matches over the weekend in Charleston, S.C. at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. The Midshipmen will take on The Citadel women's team (2-12) and Georgia Southern (13-1) on Saturday before facing off against The Citadel coed team (2-12) on Sunday. Both matches are slated to start at 9:00 a.m. and live results will be available.
 
National Standings
Navy enters the weekend in 11th-place in the NCAA in the national standings, moving up two spots after a record-setting performance at Army in the annual Star Match last weekend and upping their NCAA qualifying score to 4710. Georgia Southern is in sixth with an NCAA mark of 4729. The Citadel coed team is in 22nd with a score of 4585.33, while the women's only squad sits in 27th with a score of 4207. Nebraska maintains the eighth and final NCAA spot with a qualifying score of 4723.33, setting the mark to beat in order to get into the coveted top 8.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
The Midshipmen enter the weekend on the heels of a record-breaking performance at the Army-Navy Star Match at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, N.Y. The Midshipmen registered a school-record score in the current Army-Navy scoring format to post a 5896-5863 win in Star Match, which is part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA. In addition, the Midshipmen shot a school record in the NCAA scoring format, notching a team score of 4724.
 
The Mids have topped the 4700-point plateau five times, counting the season-high 4724 on Saturday. Additionally, Navy has come within five points of the 4700-mark on two other occasions, including 4695 points against reigning champion Alaska Fairbanks.
 
Freshman Isabella Baldwin and junior Marleigh Duncan continue to hold the top two spots on the squad, ranking first or second among the Navy shooters this season.
 
Baldwin leads the team in smallbore, air rifle and aggregate, with Duncan holding onto second place in each category. Baldwin boasts a smallbore average of 587.7 and an air rifle tally of 593.6. The rookie has a team-high 1181.3 in aggregate scoring.
 
Duncan ranks second on the season in all three shooting categories. The junior holds a 586.3 average in smallbore, while notching a 592.3 in air rifle. Duncan has an aggregate average of 1178.6 through the eight competition dates of the 2023-24 season.
 
Clarissa Layland is third on the team in air rifle and aggregate scoring. The senior holds a 592.3 mean score in air rifle, while notching a tally of 1168.1 in the combined average. Additionally, Layland is fifth on the squad with a 575.8 average in smallbore scoring.
 
Freshman Ryan Wee has moved into the top five for the Midshipmen in each scoring category. Wee is fourth in smallbore with a score of 578.8, while ranking fifth on the team in air rifle (586.6) and fourth in aggregate (1165.4).
 
Junior Stephanie Milvain is fourth on the team in smallbore with a score of 579.4, while holding an average score of 1161.2 in aggregate to place fifth on Navy's team standings.
 
Senior Deonte Hayes is fourth air rifle with an average of 588.0. Additionally, he is just outside the top five in smallbore (572.5) and aggregate (1160.5), ranking sixth on the team in both categories.
 
Junior Joshua Potts has notched a mean score of 585.5 in air rifle to rank sixth on the team, while posting a 571.9 in smallbore to place seventh. He is 3.1 points back of Hayes in aggregate scoring with a tally of 1157.4 on the year.
 
Sophomore Catherine Dely (1146.9), sophomore Devin Uhrich (1142.3), senior Mark Dely (1131.5), sophomore Grace Shepard (1128.0), and freshman John Dely (1098.3) round out the aggregate scoring for the Midshipmen. Freshman Chelsie Glover has turned in an air rifle average of 581.0 in five competitions of the season.
 
Scouting the Opposition
Georgia Southern:
The Eagles on the heels of a pair of victories against Ole Miss (W, 4710-4701) and UAB (W, 4710-4593) last weekend at the Shooting Sports Education Center in Statesboro, Ga. Georgia Southern is 13-1 overall with the one blemish on its overall record coming at the hands of TCU (L, 4734-4702), who is currently second overall in the NCAA standings. Emma Pohlmann leads the Eagles in smallbore (587.3) and aggregate (1182.3) scoring, while holding the second spots in air rifle (595.0) behind team-leader Ella Goldfaden who leads the event with a tally of 595.5.
 
The Citadel: The Citadel holds a 2-12 overall mark on the season with victories over Wofford (W, 4566-4389) and VMI (W, 4611-4598). Most recently, the Bulldogs fell at North Georgia, 4649-3863. James Hart leads The Citadel coed team with an aggregate average of 1172.7, while also posting scores of 582.9 in smallbore and 589.8 in air rifle. On the women's side, Meghan Mix leads the group with a 1126.1 in aggregate with smallbore and air rifle tallies of 549.1 and 577.0, respectively.

Following the matches against Georgia Southern and The Citadel, Navy will return home to face John Jay in the NCAA Qualifier at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in the final tune up for the Midshipmen before the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship. Competition against John Jay is slated for 9:00 a.m. and live results will be available.
