Navy to Face No. 40 Princeton, Butler, Marist and Marquette in Final Contests Before League Play

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Winning its last three matches, the Navy women's tennis team is set to head to Orlando, Fla., this week for four spring-break matches at the USTA National Campus.

Opening the three-day stretch, the Midshipmen will face No. 40 Princeton (8-3) at 11:30 a.m. on Monday before squaring off with Butler (10-6) at 3 p.m. later that day. After a day off, the Mids then return on Wednesday for an 11:30 a.m. match with Marist (2-10) and a 6:30 p.m. contest against Marquette (2-12).

Tannenbaum Chasing Records
No. 1 singles player and junior Emily Tannenbaum has been near-dominant this spring, posting a 12-0 singles record in dual matches and entering Monday on a 12-match singles winning streak dating back to the fall … Now sitting alone at third in program history with 79 career singles wins, Tannenbaum needs 10 more to catch Amanda Keller for second … Sitting third in program history with 139 career combined wins as well, Tannenbaum needs 12 more to catch Erin Snook for second … With 26 singles wins this season, Tannenbaum is three shy of matching her program-record 29 singles victories from last season … With 30 career victories as the Mids' top singles player, Tannenbaum needs three more wins at the No. 1 singles spot to match Keller for the career program record … Tannenbaum is also one doubles win away from matching Snook's 61 doubles victories that ranks fifth in program history … With her 13-straight wins, Tannenbaum is now tied for the second-longest singles winning streak in program history and is two wins away from catching Kacey Moore's program-record 15-straight singles wins.

Johns Catching Fire
Senior Samantha Johns has been a force for the Mids recently, as a seven-match singles winning streak boosted her spring record to 10-2, including a perfect 6-0 record at the No. 2 singles position … Johns is now 19-8 in singles play on the season and has a 15-11 mark in doubles action, finding a place on the No. 1 pairing alongside sophomore Sia Chaudry … Johns now has a career singles record of 42-18.

Puryear Reaches Another Milestone
Just weeks after achieving one milestone, head coach Keith Puryear reached another career milestone with the March 2 win over Drexel … After notching his 200th home win with the Mids on Feb. 17, Puryear earned his 500th victory as a women's head coach by defeating Drexel, as he collected 215 wins as the UMBC women's coach and now has 287 victories at Navy … Including his time as UMBC's men's coach, Puryear now has 730 career coaching wins.

Last Time Out
Posting its third-straight win in a six-day span, Navy used a strong start to defeat Georgetown by a 5-2 score on Thursday … Using doubles wins from the No. 2 pairing of juniors Kate Lee and Parvathi Shanker and the No. 3 team Johns and freshman Julia Lee, Navy took the opening point despite Tannenbaum and rookie Olivia Fermo dropping the No. 1 match … Johns, freshmen Makaila Cheng and Anna Jordaan and Tannenbaum sealed the Navy victory while Shanker and fellow junior Sylvia Eklund both forced third sets before eventually falling to their Hoya counterparts.

Scouting Princeton
The Tigers were slotted No. 40 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, entering the week with an 8-3 record … Winning its last two contests, Princeton posted 4-2 victories over both Old Dominion and Penn State to rebound after a loss to then-No. 1 Oklahoma State … The 2023 Ivy League regular season champions, Princeton brings back All-Ivy First Teamer Neha Velaga, who took home Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors two seasons ago.

Scouting Butler
Holding a 10-6 record, the Bulldogs will play Villanova on Sunday before facing Navy … Butler won its last two matches, beating Dayton and Ball State to end a three-match skid … Advancing to the Big East Quarterfinals last year, the Bulldogs return All-Conference First Team selection Natalie Boesing.

Scouting Marist
The Red Foxes will arrive in Orlando on a four-match losing streak that finds them at 2-10 this spring … Marist will play Marquette and Hampton on Tuesday before facing the Mids … Caterina Assi claimed the most-recent MAAC Player of The Week accolade.

Scouting Marquette
Losing their last four contests and set to face Marist on Tuesday, the Golden Eagles are 2-12 on the season … Advancing to the Big East Quarterfinals last year, the Bulldogs return All-Conference First Team selection Emilija Kojcic … Kojcic leads Marquette this season with 10 singles wins, while Lara Kaiser is 11-10 in doubles action.

Series Histories
Navy is 0-1 all-time against Princeton, previously losing to the Tigers in 2019 … The Mids will face Butler for the first time in program history on Monday … Navy has a 1-0 lead in the all-time series with Marist, beating the Red Foxes in 2015 … Despite having players face each other at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, this will mark the first time Navy and Marquette have faced each other in dual season.
