ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two events this past weekend, holding one of its annual races in Annapolis while sending sailors to the St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md.
Hosting the Jen Harris Women's Team Race, Navy was able to compete against some of the top women's teams from around the country. Named in honor of the late Capt. Jennifer Harris, a 2000 Navy sailing alumnus, the regatta was held this year at the Annapolis Sailing School due to construction in Santee Basin. Saturday proved to be very wet and rainy with inconsistent easterly wind, a Navy had some good races along with some learning moments where winnable races slipped away. At the end of the initial round robin, Navy was 3-8 overall and seeded in the silver round for Sunday. Navy then came out strong to open the second day, winning the first two races in puffy and shifty winds as the Midshipmen displayed excellent boat-handling in the challenging conditions. Unfortunately, strong gusts of wind outside of sailable range started reaching the course and racing was abandoned. With the overall results reverting back to the original round robin results, Navy's team finished ninth overall out of 12 teams, as the skippers in senior
Aubin Hattendorf, junior
Evie Blauvelt and sophomore
Ava Farley were with crews of senior
Catherine Aitken, junior
Maggie Schuler, sophomore Ella Niehoff and freshmen
Mary Dwyer, Darby Dryen and
Josie Sherry.
Heading to southern Maryland for the St. Mary's Team Race, the Mids sailed in the second weekend of the MAISA team racing schedule, as the event attracted a number of top out-of-conference teams as well. St. Mary's also saw a soggy Saturday, but the teams were able to complete a good number of races on the day. Fortunately, the strong winds held off on Sunday until later in the day, with a pair of nine-team round robins and a gold-six round being completed, and Navy sailed well in a variety of conditions to remain among the leaders throughout the event. In the end, the team of skippers in sophomores
Nathan Smith and
Jack Welburn and freshman
Henry Allgeier partnered with crews of seniors
Madeline Smith and
Hunter Anderson, juniors
Ryan Wahba and
Tanner Kelly and sophomores
Ellie Alex and
Darby Graham to finish third overall out of nine teams with a record of 15-6. As the top MAISA team, Navy earned maximum conference points from the weekend.
Navy returns to the water on March 16-17, hosting the Graham Hall Team Race in Annapolis and sending Mids to the Washington College Team Race in Chestertown, Md.
