ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team returned from spring break training in Charleston this past weekend to compete in a pair of Maryland-based regattas.
Â
Hosted by the Midshipmen in Annapolis, the Graham Hall Team Race, one of the biggest annual collegiate team races on the schedule, featured 16 teams from around the country in a very deep, talented field. Light wind on Saturday morning caused a short postponement but the afternoon saw near-perfect conditions, while Sunday also had a delay before light wind allowed for the completion of the round robin and a final-four competition.
Â
Despite many of the Mids recovering from illness, the team stepped up to go 10-5 in the round robin to finish in a respectable sixth place. Navy's team consisted of junior
Evie Blauvelt, sophomores
Nathan Smith and
Jack Welburn and freshman
Henry Allgeier as skippers with crews in senior
Madeline Smith, junior
Ryan Wahba and sophomores
Ellie Alex and
Darby Graham.
Â
Many of Navy's other sailors competed in the Washington College Team Race in Chestertown, Md., where light winds and strong currents saw that event also complete a single round robin and a final four from the eight-team field.
Â
Navy's team featured skippers in senior
Trenton Shaw, junior
Tanner Kelly and freshmen
George Carty,
Logan Hayes,
Kate Zurinskas,
Spencer Dominguez and
Teddy Martin with crews consisting of juniors
Maggie Schuler and
Linnea Forsberg, sophomore
Alex Brenia and freshman
Fiona Cullen,
Darby Dryden,
Mary Dwyer and
Eva Ottenbreit, as the Mids took third overall with a record of 6-4.
Â
Navy is back in action with three events on March 23-24, sending Mids to the Aaron Szambecki Team Race in Norfolk, Va., the Seahawk Women's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md., and the Severn River Team Race in Annapolis.
