Women’s Rugby Places Eighth at Tropical 7s

TAMPA, Fla. - The Navy women's rugby team placed eighth in the senior women's division at the seventh annual Tropical 7s Tournament on Saturday in Tampa, Fla.
 
The Mids dropped their three pool phase matches on Friday to the Chicago Lions (31-0), Faith Family Rugby (22-14) and MacDowell Rugby (33-14).
 
Navy came up short in its three playoff games, falling to Chicago North Shore (22-5), H.E.B Lady Hurricanes (15-0) and Phoenix Rugby (17-14) to finish in eighth place.

Navy vs. Chicago Lions (Loss, 31-0)
The Mids opened the tournament with a 31-0 loss to the Chicago Lions. No box score was provided for the match.
 
Navy vs. Faith Family Rugby (Loss, 22-14)
Navy wasn't able to hold its first-half lead in its, 22-14, loss to Faith Family Rugby.
 
Mia Young scored the first try just one minute into the game. Abby Hershner made the ensuing conversion kick to give the Mids a 7-0 lead. Faith Family answered with a try 35 seconds later and nailed the conversion kick to tie the match, 7-7. Faith Family took its first lead with a try in the fourth minute. Young found the try zone for the second time in the sixth minute and Hershner put Navy ahead, 14-12, with her second conversion kick.
 
Faith Family controlled the second half, scoring a try in the eighth and 11th minutes to win the match.
 
Navy vs. MacDowell Rugby (Loss, 33-14)
A big first half propelled MacDowell Rugby to a 33-14 victory over the Mids.
 
MacDowell scored three tries in the first seven minutes to take a 21-0 lead.
 
MacDowell extended its advantage to, 26-0, with a try in the eighth minute. Megan Leitz ran into the try zone 11th minute for Navy's first score of the match. Hershner followed up with a successful conversion kick to make the score, 26-7. MacDowell responded with its fifth try of the contest in the 13th minute to extend its lead to 33-7. Alexis Rohrbach ended the match on a good note with a try in the 14th minute. Hershner continued her excellent day by putting the conversion kick through the uprights.
 
Navy vs. Chicago North Shore (Loss, 22-5)
The Mids battled the No. 1 seed from the pool A division, Chicago North Shore, in the playoff quarterfinals.
 
Chicago put the first points on the scoreboard with a try in the second minute. Chicago's kicker then made a conversion kick to make the score, 7-0. Leitz accounted for Navy's first try of the game in the fifth minute to make the score, 7-5.
 
Chicago North Shore found its offense late in the second half to pull away. It scored a try in the 10th, 12th and 14th minutes to outscore the Mids, 15-0, in the second half to win the game by a score of 22-5.
 
Navy vs. H.E.B Lady Hurricanes (Loss, 15-0)
Navy still had an opportunity to place as high as fifth after it was sent to the consolation bracket following its first loss on Saturday.
 
The Mids met the H.E.B. Lady Hurricanes in their next match, but once again struggled to find offense. H.E.B. held Navy scoreless in the match and scored three tries in the first half to win, 15-0.
 
Navy vs. Phoenix Rugby (Loss, 17-14)
The final action of the tournament for the Mids was in the seventh-place match against Phoenix Rugby.
 
Phoenix gained a 10-0 advantage in the first half by scoring tries in the third and fifth minutes. Lilliana Gemma scored a huge try in the seventh minute to give Navy momentum. Hershner ended the first half by making the conversion kick to make the score, 10-7.
 
The Mids took their first lead in the 11th minute. Siena Hall recorded the go-ahead try and Hershner built the lead to, 14-10, thanks to a successful conversion kick. Phoenix took the lead back in the 14th minute with a try. The match ended after Phoenix made the conversion kick to claim the match, 17-14.  
 
Navy will return to the pitch to compete in the Emperor 7s on Sunday, April 14 in Princeton, N.J. A start time for the tournament is to be determined.
