Six-Match Weekend for Men’s Tennis Leads into Spring Break

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team heads into spring break with six matches over the course of the next three days.  The Mids (15-7) will play host to No. 62 NJIT (10-1) and Temple (5-6) Friday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.  Saturday's slate features Navy playing at Norfolk State (4-3) and at No. 74 William & Mary (5-6).  Then on Sunday, the Mids will play a pair of matches at Richmond (8-1).

Navy (15-7)
The Mids faced a challenging slate of opponents last week and lost to current No. 40 Delaware (5-2), James Madison (7-0) and Drexel (5-2).  Navy also won a 7-0 match against Coppin State.

No. 62 NJIT (10-1)
NJIT returned to the weekly national rankings this week after previously being ranked 74th on Feb. 20th and not appearing in the Feb. 27 tabulation.  The Highlanders have posted wins this season over Bucknell (5-2), Fairleigh Dickinson (7-0) and Long Island (7-0) and also lost a 4-3 decision to Drexel.    NJIT has recorded 4-3 wins in each of its last three matches, with the last match coming against current No. 73 Dartmouth.  

Navy has defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (5-2) and Long Island (4-3).

The Highlanders ended last season with a 15-8 overall record.  The No. 4 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament lost on the quarterfinal round of the event.

NJIT holds a 3-2 lead in the series with Navy and has won the last two matches.  Last year saw the Highlanders win a 7-0 decision.  Friday's match will be the first to be played away from NJIT.

Temple (5-6)
The Owls have defeated Norfolk State (5-2), Brown (4-3) and Fairleigh Dickinson (6-1) this year, with losses coming to Penn State (4-3), current No. 55 Yale (7-0), No. 42 Old Dominion (7-0), No. 73 Dartmouth (4-0) and No. 46 Cornell (4-0).

Temple compiled a 19-5 overall record last season.  The eighth-seeded Owls lost to top-seeded Memphis in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

Navy leads the series with Temple, 24-6, but the Owls have won the last two matches.  The final score in each of the last two and four of the last five matches between the teams has been 4-3.

Norfolk State (4-3)
The Spartans have dropped matches to No. 42 Old Dominion (4-0), Temple (5-2) and Drexel (4-0) this year and have tallied a victory over Loyola (6-1).

Norfolk State posted a 4-16 record last season, which included a loss in the semifinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Navy has won three of the four previous matches with Norfolk State.  The Mids posted a 7-0 win last season in Norfolk.

No. 74 William & Mary (5-6)
The Tribe has spent three-straight week's in the ITA national rankings (No. 73 on Feb. 20, No. 65 on Feb. 27 and now No. 74 on March 5).  William & Mary has lost to Florida Atlantic (5-2), which is currently ranked 36th, Old Dominion (5-2), which is ranked 42nd, Yale (4-0), which is ranked 55th, Delaware (6-1), which is now ranked 40th and Princeton (6-1), which is now No. 23  The Tribe has posted wins over Youngstown State (7-0) and two wins over Dartmouth (4-3, 4-3), which is now ranked 73rd.  The Mids also have defeated Youngstown State (4-3).

William & Mary ended last season with a 9-11 overall record.  The Tribe was seeded second in the Colonial (now Coastal) Athletic Association Tournament, but was upset by No. 7 seed Memphis in the quarterfinals of the event.

The series between the teams dates back to 1930.  The Mids lead the series, 31-12, but the Tribe has won the last eight matches dating back to 1996.  William & Mary defeated Navy, 6-1, last season in Williamsburg.

Richmond (8-1)
The Spiders have edged Army (4-3) this season and defeated Dayton by the same score.  Richmond also lost a match to current No. 33 VCU (6-1).

The Spiders tallied a 14-9 record last season and earned the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament where it lost, 4-3, in the semifinal round to sixth-seeded Dayton.

The teams have meet 40 previous times in the last 49 seasons (since 1974).  Navy holds a 26-14 lead.  Richmond won a 4-3 decision in the 2022 meeting, but the Mids won a 4-0 match last season.  Sunday's matches will be the first in the series to be played at Richmond since 2007.
