ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team travels to West Point, N.Y., this weekend for the Patriot League Tournament.  The second-seeded Mids (26-14, 5-2) will open the event with a quarterfinal round match against No. 7 Loyola (7-13, 2-5) Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Last Week
Navy enters the tournament after posting a 4-1 victory over Army Saturday in Annapolis in the annual Star Match between the teams.  The Mids won the doubles point and two straight-set singles victories on their way to recording the win.  

J.J. Etterbeek and Aniketh Ayinala each won a pair of matches against the Black Knights.  The players formed the team's No. 2 doubles tandem that won a 6-1 decision, then Etterbeek lost just four games in winning his No. 5 singles match and Ayinala tallied a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the No. 6 flight. Team captain Sasha Panyan rallied for a 6-0, 4-0 deficit to win his No. 1 singles match, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2, and earn the final point of the day.

Patriot League Tournament History
Navy has won each of the last five league tournament titles and 11 crowns in the last 16 seasons in which the tournament has been held.  The Mids advanced to the final in 15 of those 16 years.  Navy has totaled 15 league titles in the 29 seasons in which the tournament has featured head-to-head matches.

Loyola Preview
Navy defeated Loyola, 6-1, when the teams met April 6 in Annapolis.  The Mids won each of the three doubles matches and five straight-set singles matches to earn the victory.

Loyola closed its regular season with a 4-1 loss to Colgate and a 4-3 victory over Lafayette.

Navy posted a 4-0 win over Loyola in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 league tournament.

Possible Semifinal Opponents
The winner of the Friday's match will advance to a Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) semifinal round match against the winner of the No. 3 Bucknell (15-6, 4-2) vs. No. 6 Colgate (6-14, 2-4) match.

Bucknell recorded a 7-0 victory over Colgate earlier this season in a match played in Lewisburg.

Bucknell's two league defeats were a 4-2 loss to top-seeded Boston and a 5-2 loss to Navy on April 14.  The Mids won the doubles point in their match with the Bison, which included a 7-5 win by Navy at No. 3 doubles and the Mids holding a 6-5 lead at the No. 1 flight when it was halted due to the point was decided.  Half of the singles matches were extended into three sets.  The Mids won one of those three-set matches and a pair of straight-set matches to earn the overall victory.

Navy defeated Bucknell, 4-3, in the semifinal round of the 2023 Patriot League Tournament.

Navy did not play Colgate this season.  The Mids defeated the Raiders, 7-0, in a 2023 meeting in Annapolis.  The teams last met in the tournament in a semifinal round match in 2021.  The Mids recorded a 4-0 win over the Raiders that day in Bethlehem, Pa.
