Navy Picks Up Pace Throughout Day of Action at Atlantic-10 Invitational

Mids’ V8 won race in afternoon session over Rhode Island and Bucknell

LEONIA, N.J. – The Navy women's rowing team had an action-packed day of racing at Overpeck Park in northern New Jersey on Saturday. The Mids were entered in 10 races over two sessions against nine different institutions as part of the Atlantic-10 Invitational. Navy's first varsity eight highlighted the competition with a victory in the afternoon session to go along with eight other runner-up results by Midshipmen crews.

"It was good to get back to racing this weekend," remarked head coach Joe Schlosberg. "The blustery wind made for some interesting conditions and challenging racing for all crews. The team did a good job from the morning to the afternoon closing margins and even flipping them in some cases."

The first varsity eight crew led off the action on Saturday as it was matched up in a heat against Columbia and Marist. The Lions and Mids were the class of the field as they easily cleared the Red Foxes by nearly 30 seconds. At the finish line, Columbia was victorious over Navy by 9.067 seconds, 7:36.733 to 7:45.800; Marist clocked in at 8:15.718. In the afternoon session of racing, the Mids competed against Rhode Island and Patriot League rival Bucknell. Not only did Navy's V8 improve its finish, but it also shaved 7.053 seconds off its initial time. After 2,000 meters of racing, the Mids were victorious with a 7:38.747 to best the Rams' 7:43.274 and the Bison's 8:01.155.

A similar alignment and finish of Columbia-Navy-Marist occurred in the first heat of second varsity eight racing on Saturday. The Lions defended their home course with a time of 8:12.083 versus an 8:39.706 for the Mids and a 9:02.950 for the Red Foxes. In the afternoon, Navy picked up its pace by over 30 seconds to 8:06.823, though Rhode Island was victorious in the contest with a 7:58.755 time. Bucknell finished 8.143 seconds behind Navy at 8:14.966.

The final Columbia-Navy-Marist matchup of the morning came in the first varsity four classification. The Lions won their third straight race with an 8:44.914 time, while the Mids and Red Foxes followed with times of 9:13.901 and 9:18.422, respectively. After a brief break, Navy's V4 had a one-on-one bout with Rhode Island to close out its day. The Rams cruised in this matchup 9:18.962 to 9:40.980 over the Mids.

The third varsity eight faced off with different combatants in both sessions as Navy was involved in a heat versus Columbia, Bucknell and George Washington in the morning and Columbia, UMass and Marist in the afternoon. The Mids initially placed third of four crews at 8:54.291 (Columbia, Bucknell, Navy, GW) before bettering both its time and result in session number two. Navy's 3V8 cut 27.583 seconds off its time from the morning and cruised to a runner-up finish behind Columbia, 8:10.517 to 8:26.708. The Mids significantly bested the Minutewomen (9:04.498) and Red Foxes (9:14.566).

The final crew on the water as Navy's second varsity four. The Mids' first effort of the day saw them clock in second of four teams with a time of 9:13.983. They trailed Columbia (8:47.186), but defeated UMass (9:35.703) and UConn (10:41.270). While the Lions won the second matchup with a 8:42.740 time, the Mids were extremely competitive and were edged by just 1.46 seconds as they crossed the finish line at 8:44.200. George Washington was well off the pace set by Columbia and Navy and posted a 9:50.004 time.

"We are gaining some valuable racing experience, but now we can focus on training for a few weeks before we head down to the Lake Wheeler Invite," said Schlosberg in closing.

Navy will take a mid-season break from competition as they'll be off until the Lake Wheeler Invitational on the weekend of April 26-27.
