ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued its spring season at the MAISA Team Racing Championship, competing Saturday and Sunday for the Prosser Trophy in Norfolk, Va.
Â
Hosted by Old Dominion University and featuring the top eight teams in the conference, the regatta saw Saturday start out with heavy wind out of the northwest as racing was delayed until the wind calmed some. Once on the water with winds at 10-25 knots, the Midshipmen came out strong by winning their first seven races and losing only one race on the day to finish Saturday at 10-1, sitting in strong position going into Sunday. On Sunday morning, however, racing umpires called for a hearing regarding a collision that took place after a race on day 1, and deliberations found the Midshipmen at fault for the collision, subtracting one win from Navy's record.
Â
Conditions were much lighter on Sunda but Navy kept up the strong sailing, winning all of its races to finish the second round with an overall record of 12-1. A final-six round was started but abandoned as time and conditions made the conclusion of the round impossible.
Â
With just the 2 rounds scored, Navy wound up tied for first with Georgetown at 12 wins apiece and, due to sailing tiebreak rules, the fact that Navy had fewer losses than Georgetown was not considered. Since the team had split head to head 1-1, Georgetown ended up winning the championship based on total points scored in the two races sailed between the teams.Â
Â
