ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following a week without competitive play, the Navy women's rugby team (1-1, 0-1) is back on the pitch when it welcomes Quinnipiac (0-0-2, 0-0-1) on Saturday. Kickoff against the Bobcats is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Saturday's match can be watched live on the Navy Athletics YouTube page and on navysports.com.
"The team had another good week of practice. Many of our younger players are stepping up and pushing the pace of training.," stated head coach Murph McCarthy. "We are obviously a little bit healthier with an extra week in between matches. Quinnipiac is a strong program and we have been working hard to be as technical as possible in preparation for the upcoming match."
Alvarez Looking to Contribute
Sophomore Meagan Alvarez did not see any 15's varsity action last season. This season, Alvarez has started in both matchups against Queen's University of Charlotte and Frostburg State and leads the team with 22 total points. The Miami, Fla., native set program records for the most points in a match (20) and conversion kicks in a match (5) in the dominant 59-5 victory over Frostburg State.
Big Day in Frostburg
· The Midshipmen had a record setting day in their 59-5 victory over Frostburg State.
· Navy's 59 points a match was best for second-most in program history; just two points shy of tying the all-time record when it scored 61 points against Utah State in 2022. The 54-point margin of victory is the largest in program history.
· A total of nine tries were scored by the Mids, that ties the second-most all-time and the most tries since scoring six tries in the 38-3 victory over West Chester last season.
· The Mids had a big first half as they scored six tries and five conversion to enter halftime with a 40-0 lead. The 40 first half points ranks the second-most in a half in the program's young existence.
Navy Notes
Through two matches, seven different Mids have reached the try zone. Junior forward Ashley Spencer leads the team with three tries.
Scouting Quinnipiac
· The Bobcats are led by 14th year head coach Becky Carlson. Carlson boasts an 87-36-3 all-time record including winning three-straight Division I NIRA national championship titles from 2015-17.
· Quinnipiac enters the match with a 0-0-2 record. The Bobcats opened their season in a 17-17 battle at Brown despite having an early 12-0 lead.
· In their last outing against the defending national champions at Harvard, Quinnipiac nearly knocked off the defending champs but a try at the 80th-minute mark left the teams in a 20-20 stalemate.
Series History vs. Quinnipiac
Saturday's meeting marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs. In last year's meeting, the Bobcats picked up the 46-3 victory in Annapolis.
