ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's Rugby (1-2, 0-2) team fell to Quinnipiac (1-0-2, 1-0-1) on Saturday afternoon, 38-3.
"When you play a team like Quinnipiac, you want to raise your level of play. I think in some ways we did raise our level. They're a strong team who tied against the defending national champions in Harvard," stated head coach Murph McCarthy. "Obviously, I wished we got more effectiveness from our attack, but the girls fought hard defensively. It's a good match to learn on against a good team."
The Midshipmen was set to receive the opening kickoff but was muffed and recovered by the Bobcats who kicked their way into the 22-meter zone. Passing its way out of a maul Quinnipiac efficient passing across the field opened a lane for its first try in the first four minutes of the match.
Navy defended the Bobcats' frequent offensive attack early on causing turnovers inside its own 22m zone and attempted to flip the field position with a clearing kick.
Quinnipiac scored three more tries before the half with two coming in a span of five minutes. The Bobcats continued their strong passing to get past the Midshipmen defense for a try at the 12:17 mark. Quinnipiac shortly scored following a Navy turnover inside its own five-meter zone and pushed their way into the try zone to extend its lead 21-0.
In the second half, the Mids defense was stout allowing 12 points on two tries within 10-minutes of each other. The Bobcats scored at the 58:06 and 68:58 mark.
Sophomore center prevented Quinnipiac from a third try in the half with a chase down tackle right at the try zone, forcing the Bobcats defender to fumble the ball and give Navy possession.
At the 63rd-minute mark, Navy would get on the scoreboard as it took advantage of a Bobcats penalty and attempted a penalty kick. The Mids primary kicker, Meagan Alvarez drains the kick through the post for their first points of the match.
Alvarez has scored in all three of Navy's matches this season. The Miami, Fla., native became the 10th Midshipmen in program history to score in three or more straight matches.
"Alvarez came to us as a soccer player, we assumed she could kick and we were right. She's also a very good ball carrier, she has come a long way in the last year," said McCarthy.
