ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team (4-5) closed its fall season on Saturday with a dominant 53-0 win over Penn State (2-5) at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis. The strong showing on senior day marked the program's second shutout in varsity history and snapped a three-game losing skid.
"It was a great day at the Prusmack Rugby Center as we honored our senior class today," said Navy head coach
Murph McCarthy, "and they put on a show for everyone in attendance with some very good rugby."
Senior
Aliyah Alexander set the tone early with her first-career try in the third minute, then added two more before halftime to help Navy build a 22-0 lead.
Bigue Kah also scored in the opening half and
Emma Magness added a try right before the break as the Midshipmen carried a 29-0 advantage into halftime.
Navy kept up the pressure in the second half as
Ashley Spencer powered through for a try and added a conversion in the 49th minute. Kah added her second try of the day just two minutes later.
Laryssa Payne broke free for another score midway through the half and
Keira Cole capped the day with a try in the final minutes to seal the shutout.
Hannah Brink converted a season-best three kicks after tries as she handled the majority of the kicking duties for the Midshipmen, while Spencer added her first conversion of the season.
