Bayliss and Officer Inducted into Local Tennis Hall of Fame

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Former Navy men's tennis coaches Bobby Bayliss and John Officer were among those inducted as part of the inaugural class of the Anne Arundel County Tennis Hall of Fame in ceremonies held November 6 at Chartwell Golf & Country Club.

The hall of fame, which is selected by the non-profit Tennis Alliance, recognizes leaders in the tennis community and players who have served tennis in Anne Arundel County with distinction.

Bayliss began serving as the Navy head coach with the 1969-70 season and would remain in the position for 15 years.  His teams amassed an overall record of 247-80 and an Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association record of 78-57.  He sent singles players or doubles teams to seven NCAA Tournaments and was named the USPTA National Coach of the Year in 1980.

He went on to serve as the head coach at Notre Dame for 26 seasons.  Bayliss totaled a 765-339-1 record over his 44 years as a collegiate head coach.

Officer succeeded Bayliss as the head coach of the Mids prior to the start of the 1984-85 season.  He tallied a 462-304 record in his 29 years on The Yard.  That mark included a 75-23 record in Patriot League regular season matches and a 32-12 record in the league tournament.

The Mids won three Colonial Athletic Association titles and eight Patriot League championships under Officer.  He himself earned seven Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year awards, one coach-of-the-year accolade from the CAA, was named the 1991 and '99 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Coach of the Year and the 1991 USPTA National Coach of the Year.
