NEW ORLEANS, La. – All-Region honorees for the 2025 NCAA Division I Cross Country season were recognized on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following Regional Championships Friday. Among those named All-Mid-Atlantic Region were Navy runners
Justin Mumford,
Jackson Nguyen, and
Matt Newell.
Athletes earned the distinction of All-Region by virtue of a top-25 finish at one of the nine regional sites this past weekend. Only athletes from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
Mumford (3rd), Nguyen (17th), and Newell (24th) all finished in the top 25 at the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship among the 197 individuals who completed the 10K race at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on the campus of Lehigh.
As a team, the Midshipmen posted a fifth-place finish. As a team, the Mids averaged 30:16.1 among their top five with 1:05.3 separating the top five Navy runners.
Mumford's third-place finish tied
Murphy Smith's performance during the 2023 season as the highest by a Navy individual since Jake Brophy ('20) finished second at the 2019 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional as a senior.
Mumford clocked a 10K time of 29:28.9 to finish third overall among the 197 runners who finished the race. He was in fifth through the first mile and moved up to third at the two-mile checkpoint. By the 5K marker, the senior had moved into first place and remained in the top spot through the 8K checkpoint. Mumford was passed by individual medalist Birhanu Harriman (29:20.6) of Georgetown and Myles Hogan (29:21.2) of Princeton over the final 2000m, but was able to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Nguyen, the 2025 team captain, finished 17th overall with a time of 30:16.0. Nguyen was 49th through the first mile, but methodically worked his way up into the top 20 throughout the course of the race. Fellow senior Newell was third amongst the Midshipmen runners with a 24th-place finish. He clocked a time of 30:28.6 in his final NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
It is the second consecutive season that Mumford and Nguyen have earned All-Region, while it was a first for Newell.
