Women’s Tennis Defeats Tampa to Start Florida Trip

Navy Claims Doubles Point While Tannenbaum, Shanker, Gu and Bellia Pick Up Singles Wins

TAMPA, Fla. – Earning its first road win of the spring, the Navy women's tennis team used efforts from throughout its lineup to defeat Tampa, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Naimoli and Young Tennis Complex in Tampa, Fla.

The victory improved the Midshipmen to 4-6 on the campaign, while the Spartans shifted to 2-1 overall.

Navy used a quick start to take the doubles point, as the top duo of senior Emily Tannenbaum and Olivia Fermo beat Nicole Cierniak and Victoria Sanchez, 6-2, while the No. 3 pairing of senior Parvathi Shanker and freshman Grace Li also scored a 6-2 win against Linn Eriksson Sundling and Sophia Gutkowski. Tampa avoided the doubles sweep with Alexandra Chebli and Ida Axelsson knocking off senior Sylvia Eklund and sophomore Anna Jordaan on the second court.

Tannenbaum then opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Cierniak in the top spot, while rookie Molly Bellia then beat Regina Davalos, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 6 position. Fellow freshman Emma Gu then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Eriksson Sundling on the fifth court to clinch the team victory, but Nicole Casas and Sanchez stymied the Mids' hopes of taking all six singles matches. Casas beat senior Kate Lee, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 slot and Sanchez edged Eklund, 6-3, 6-3, in the second spot.

Closing out the match was Shanker outlasting Axelsson on the fourth court, 6-4, 6-3.
