TAMPA, Fla. – Earning its first road win of the spring, the Navy women's tennis team used efforts from throughout its lineup to defeat Tampa, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Naimoli and Young Tennis Complex in Tampa, Fla.
The victory improved the Midshipmen to 4-6 on the campaign, while the Spartans shifted to 2-1 overall.
Navy used a quick start to take the doubles point, as the top duo of senior
Emily Tannenbaum and
Olivia Fermo beat Nicole Cierniak and Victoria Sanchez, 6-2, while the No. 3 pairing of senior
Parvathi Shanker and freshman
Grace Li also scored a 6-2 win against Linn Eriksson Sundling and Sophia Gutkowski. Tampa avoided the doubles sweep with Alexandra Chebli and Ida Axelsson knocking off senior
Sylvia Eklund and sophomore
Anna Jordaan on the second court.
Tannenbaum then opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Cierniak in the top spot, while rookie
Molly Bellia then beat Regina Davalos, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 6 position. Fellow freshman
Emma Gu then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Eriksson Sundling on the fifth court to clinch the team victory, but Nicole Casas and Sanchez stymied the Mids' hopes of taking all six singles matches. Casas beat senior
Kate Lee, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 slot and Sanchez edged Eklund, 6-3, 6-3, in the second spot.
Closing out the match was Shanker outlasting Axelsson on the fourth court, 6-4, 6-3.

• Navy is now 2-0 in the all-time series with Tampa.
• The Mids have now won 11 of their last 12 matches in the state of Florida.
