LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A 1-2 finish in the men's one-meter diving event and a victory by the women's 400 medley relay team allowed the Navy programs to remain in first place after the first full day of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship, Thursday at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Navy women's team is in first place by 72 points and the Navy men are in first by 9 points. Army stands second in both standings.
500 Free - Women
Navy placed three swimmers in the championship final, with
Sarah Eldridge placing fourth in the event with a time of 4:52.53.
Brynn Stoneburg finished in sixth place (4:54.37) and
Marin Rose placed seventh (4:56.55).
500 Free - Men
Navy swimmers claimed five of the eight berths in the championship final of the event, including the second, third and fourth-place finishers in the morning trial heats. The Mids would finish in the second through sixth spots in the final.
Ben Mauldin was the silver medalist in the race (4:24.11) and
Zach Stump earned the bronze medal (4:24.75). Additionally,
Dean Jones placed fourth (4:25.27), Ben Stankovich finished in fifth place (4:25.94) and
Everet Andrew posted a sixth-place finish (4:26.64).
200 IM - Women
Half of the eight spots in the championship final were earned by Mids.
Lauren Walsh would be the top finisher for the Mids as she placed third in a time of 2:00.48. Also, Elsie Delcruz placed fifth (2:02.48),
Catherine Weaverling finished in seventh place (2:03.47) and
Haley Harris recorded an eighth-place showing (2:04.27).
200 IM - Men
Just as in the women's edition of the event, Navy swimmers comprised half of the field in the men's 200 IM final. And just as in the women's final, the top Mid finished in third place.
Michael Phillips posted a time of 1:46.96 to earn a place on the podium.
Nate Sukeena placed fifth (1:47.42),
Kellan Pattison followed in sixth place (1:47.69) and Stephan Aguirre tallied a seventh-place effort (1:47.74).
50 Free - Women
Caroline Irwin was the lone Navy swimmer to reach the A final in the 50 free. She posted a time of 23.26 to finish in sixth place.
50 Free - Men
Navy qualified a pair of swimmers for the championship final.
Lachlan Andrew registered a third-place time of 19.80 and
Simon Thompson recorded a 19.86 to finish in fourth place.
1-Meter Diving
Navy and Army each advanced three divers to the championship final, with
Anthony Sciulli and 2024 league diver of the year
Finn Gelbach finishing 1-2, respectively, in the preliminary round of diving. However, teammate and 2023 diver of the year
Blakeman Shaw accrued 350.70 points to win the title. Placing second was Gelbach with a score of 345.70 and Sciulli finished in fourth place with a total of 321.20 points.
400 Medley Relay - Women
The Navy team of
Ela Habjan, Walsh, Irwin and
Tiffany Shields combined for a time of 3:37.50 to win the final by two seconds over Army. Loyola led Navy by 1.1 seconds after the backstroke portion of the race. Walsh posted a time of 1:00.59 in the breaststroke to boost the Mids into first by 2.6 seconds over the second-place Black Knights. Irwin left the water after the butterfly leg with Navy still in front by just under two seconds, then Sheilds stretched the lead slightly during the freestyle swim to secure the victory,
400 Medley Relay - Men
The evening closed with the Mids placing second to Army in the men's final. The Navy foursome of
Ben Irwin,
Juan Mora,
Lachlan Andrew and
Everet Andrew recorded a time of 3:08.45 to finish three seconds behind the Black Knights.
