IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 44 UC Irvine (9-3) posted a 6-1 victory over the Navy men's tennis team (12-11), Thursday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif. Navy's second scheduled match of the day at UC San Diego was canceled due to poor weather.
The doubles point between the teams went down to the final match left on the courts. Play began with Navy's No. 3 team of
Graydon Buckingham and
Zach Quattro defeating Ruining Huang and Rithvik Krishna by the score of 6-1. UCI narrowly won the next match, a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles by Sohrob Amiryavari and Lawee Sherif over
George Cutone and
Herrick Legaspi.
The Anteaters would earn the first point when their No. 1 team of Andy Nguyen and Noah Zamora, the 90th-ranked doubles tandem in the country, won a 7-6 (7-5) decision over
Luke Garner and
Jake Young.
UC Irvine would win five straight-set singles matches to secure the win.
Navy's victory was recorded by Young when he defeated Krishna, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 flight. A match by the same score went in favor of the Anteaters as Zamora, who is ranked 54th nationally in singles, held off Legaspi.
Navy will close its spring break trip with a pair of matches Friday at Point Loma (3:30 p.m. ET) and at Loyola Marymount (4 p.m. ET).
