The 20th-ranked and eighth-seeded Navy squash team (17-11) closed out play in the Hoehn Division of the College Squash Association Divisional Team Championship where it lost back-to-back 7-2 decisions to top-seeded and 13th-ranked Western (5-7) and fifth-seeded MIT (10-10). It was Navy's first appearance in the Hoehn Cup since head coach
Tyler Osborne's first year (2018-19), as Navy closed out the year with a 17-11 record.
Highlights
• Freshman
Wenqing Tang (Villanova, Pa.) was the only Navy player to win both of his matches over the weekend, earning a hard-fought 5-game victory over Western's Daniel Deverill in the opener and followed up with a 3-0 win over MIT's Philip Hyun Su Price.
• Tang, Navy's #2 player, closed out his first season by pacing the Mids with a remarkable 24-4 record.Â
• It's tied as the 14th-most single-season wins in program history and just 4 off the record set by Jeff Sawin (28-4) in 2006-07.Â
• Tang's 24 wins are the most by a Navy player since the 2012-13 campaign when John Richey finished 24-9 and teammates Mitch Bottini and Bill Kacergis boasted 27-6 records.
• The 24 wins are the most by a Navy freshman since Bottini and Kacergis in 2012-13.
• Just 5 players in program history have recorded more than 24 wins in their rookie season - 27, Mitch Bottini (2012-13) / 27, Bill Kacergis (2012-13) / 26, Hunter Boucard (2009-10) / 26, John Richey (2009-10) / 25, Nils Mattsson (2006-07)
• Additionally, Tang's 85.7 (24-4) winning percentage goes down in the record books as the second best behind Jeff Sawin's 87.5 (28-4) winning percentage in 2006-07.
•
Matt Wang (Sr / Malvern, Pa.) put together two strong matches, dropping a heartbreaker in 5 games to Western's Salaheldin Eltorgman before closing out his career with a 3-2 victory over Mero Elmarassy.
• Wang closes out a sensational career with a 72-50 record, including a 17-9 mark this season.
• Wang's 72 wins are the 12th most in school history and the most by a Navy player since Senen Ubina finished his career in 2019 with a 77-33 record.
• Wang is one of just 12 players in program history to reach the 70-win mark.
• Newcomer
Avinash Uppuluri (Short Hills, N.J.), who missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury, claimed victory in one of his two matches. He claimed a 3-1 victory over Western's Tyson Schille.
• The 17 wins by Navy are the most since Craig Dawson's final season as the Mids' head coach in 2017-18 when they posted a 17-10 record.
• It's the third time during
Tyler Osborne's career that his Mids have finished with a winning record (17-11 in 2024-25 / 15-15 in 2023-24 / 16-19 in 2022-23 / 15-12 in 2021-22 / 0-2 in 2020-21, COVID year / 9-15 in 2019-20 / 13-7 in 2018-19)
• Navy awaits the final confirmation of the dates for the 2025 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
