Track and Field Wins Nine Events at Virginia Opener

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's and women's track and field team won a total of nine events at the Virginia Opener on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville.

"It's good to be around a competitive atmosphere, there was good energy around the area," said Navy Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook. "Virginia is a team we have competed against frequently. It's good to see them and work together to try to make both teams better."

The Mids had a strong showing in the men's 400m hurdles. Senior Jacques Guillaume won the event with a time of 51.60, which is the 10th best time in program history. David Walker (54.44) and Cooper Wakley (55.73) finished fourth and fifth.

In the men's 100m sprint, Tyler Yurich's winning time of 10.47 was a career best for the junior, who won the 100m for the second-straight time this spring. Marcel Jackson (10.50) finished second, Jonah Johnson (10.56 / 10.555) claimed third and Jay Evans (10.56 / 10.560) fifth.

Johnson also had a third place finish in the men's 200m run with a time of 21.17, Simon Alexander finished .4 seconds behind Johnson, placing fourth in a time of 21.57.

Navy claimed two of the top-three spots in the men's 800m, with Greyson Gravitt winning the event in a time of 1:53.62, while Jack Lange placed third in a time of 1:54.51.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Annie Lemelin placed second with a career-best time of 13.90. She also competed in the 400m hurdles where she clocked in at 1:03.58 to finish fourth.

Senior team captain Kylie Bedard finished third in the women's 400m, finishing in a time of 57.34.

Navy was well represented in the 3,000m, with six runners finishing second through seventh place led by Olivia Lutkevich who finished second in a time of 9:57.34. May McConkey (10:16.57 / 3rd), Madeline Palmisciano (10:16.57 / 4th), Katelyn Pepin (10:32.45 / 5th), Susanna Henderson (10:40.69 / 6th) and Paige Sheiffele (10:50.12 / 7th) rounded out the final five spots.

In the field events, the men's team won the high jump, discus and shot put, while the women's team took first in the javelin, hammer throw and high jump.

Seniors Layne Rivera and Renny Murphy took first and second respectively in the women's javelin. Rivera threw a career best mark of 46.11m (151' 3") to win the event for the first time in her career. Murphy's throw of 46.09m (151' 2") placed her a close second.

Sophomore Sheldon Ulmer finished first in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.03m (6' 8"), while freshman Zoie Tesi posted a season-best height of 1.73m (5' 8") to win the women's high jump for the second-straight meet.

Adam Szatanek won the men's discus with a toss of 46.65m (153' 0"). Maxwell Rubin finished second with a personal-best mark of 45.60m (149' 7").

Jordynn Hutchinson led the Mids n the women's hammer throw with a winning toss of 52.15m (171' 1"). Hutchinson also had a pair of second place finishes in the shot put (13.90m / 45' 7.25") and discus (45.19m / 148' 3").

A trio of Mids claimed the top three spots in the men's shot. Keyshawn Dolford threw a career-best mark of 15.38m (50' 5.5") to win the event. Szatanek continued his impressive day taking second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 14.92m (48' 11.5"). Rubin placed third with a distance of 14.30m (46' 11").

Freshman Wyatt Shaw placed in the top three in two events, he finished in second in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.38m (24' 2.5") and finished third in the high jump with a height of 1.98m (6' 6").

"It was a good day all around, besides being windy. We're going to build off this and get ready for the home meet next week," said Cook.

Navy will return home next Saturday when it plays host to the Navy Outdoor Invitational at Ingram Field.
