ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team earned a 28-12 victory over Mount St. Mary's to close out action at the Navy 7s Tournament held Sunday at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis. The Mids opened the day narrowly defeated by Queens, 12-10, before dropping a 28-7 decision to LIU.
"It was a wonderful day of rugby," said Navy women's rugby head coach Murph McCarthy. "We got a ton of reps in against some good opponents. It was amazing to see all the alumni that came out and supported the program.
"The fun thing about 7s competition is you must have a short memory in between matches. We were able to clean up several of the mistakes we made in the earlier matches and pulled out the victory against Mount St. Mary's."
Match Recaps
Queens 12, Navy 10
Navy put the pressure on early in the match, forcing Queens out of bounds on the opening kickoff to steal an early possession. Sophomore Mia Young ran deep into the opposition's 22-meter zone before a knock-on penalty halted a promising drive in the third minute.
The Midshipmen were able to capitalize off a Royals penalty on a forward pass near the Queens 22-meter zone. Ella Callahan spilt the defense to score the first try of the match and send Navy into halftime with a 5-0 lead.
The Mids wasted little time in entering the try zone to start the second half thanks to proficient passing. Catherine O'Hara went on to drive in the try from the wing position to extend the team's lead to 10-0 in the ninth minute.
The Royals, however, fought their way back and scored tries in the 11th and 13th minutes to win the match, 12-10.
LIU 28, Navy 7
LIU scored the first points of the match off a long run from 50 meters out and then drilled the conversion kick to take a 7-0 lead in the third minute.
Navy benefited from an offside penalty in the fifth minute, allowing Megan Leitz to run in her first try of the day to tie the match, 7-7.
LIU closed out the first half with a try in the seventh minute to go into halftime with a 14-7 lead.
The Sharks carried that momentum into the second half where they scored two more tries in the 13th and 15th minute to win the match, 28-7.
Navy 28 vs. Mount St. Mary's 12
Navy closed out the day by earning a 28-12 victory over Mount St. Mary's. Navy's Kyndall Wyngard broke off a long run deep into Mount St. Marys' 22-meter zone and then passed off to Callahan who ran in her second try of the day 1:33 into the match.
The Mountaineers responded with a try two minutes later, but a failed conversion kick preserved the 7-5 Navy lead going into halftime.
Navy's offense exploded in the second half, as the Mids scored three tries by three different players.
Wyngard intercepted a Mountaineers pass that eventually set up a try by Mia Young in the ninth minute.
The Mids' defense continued its strong second-half effort, forcing a turnover and a lineout attempt. Senior team captain Miracle Haynes collected the pass from midfield and took it the rest of the way to extend the lead to 21-5.
Hannah Bring turned in her first try of the spring season and the Mids' final try of the match in the 14th minute.
The Mount added their second and final try at the end of regulation in the 28-12 loss.
The Mids will be back in action next Sunday when they travel to West Chester, Pa. for the West Chester 7s.
