ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Action at the 2025 USAG Collegiate National Championship Meet for the Navy gymnastics team concluded on Saturday afternoon with the event finals at Halsey Field House. The Mids were well represented on the podium throughout the meet as 10 of the team's 12 routines on Saturday earned medals with
William Champagne and
Matthew Petros leading the way with first place results.
Champagne (Sr., Douglas, Mass.) kicked off the meet in outstanding fashion as he aced his floor exercise routine with a dominant 14.0 score courtesy of a 9.4 execution grade of his 4.5-start value routine with an additional 0.1 point for a stick bonus. He cleared the runner-up Springfield's Evan Reichert by 0.6 points.
Brian Solomon (So., Lynnfield, Mass.) gave the Mids two gymnasts in the top three as he registered a score of 13.3 to grab bronze.
While Champagne led off the event finals with his victory, Petros (Jr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) closed out the meet as his win came on the high bar. Similar to his fellow gold medalist Champagne, Petros used top-notch execution to earn his win as he garnered 9.2 execution points of his 4.2-start value routine and capped his performance off with a 0.1-point stick bonus for an overall mark of 13.5. He held off his fellow high school teammate Ricky Pizem of William & Mary by 0.1 points. Competing in his first USAG Championship, freshman
Boone Washburn (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored 11.2 points for his routine to rank eighth overall.
The rings final saw a windfall of medals go out the Mids as
Aaron Stein (Jr., Houston, Texas) and
Isaiah Drake (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) went back-to-back in second and third place with respective scores of 13.15 and 13.05. Stein was crisp in his execution and dismount as he earned an 8.95 from the judges, to go along with 0.1-point stick bonus of his 4.1-start value routine.
Both Petros and Champagne gathered their second podium finishes of the day on the parallel bars. Petros was the leader of the duo as he placed third overall with a 13.3 mark coming from a 4.4 start value, 8.8 execution score and 0.1 stick bonus. Champagne was one position back on the leaderboard as he posted a 13.1 score that tied Army's Noah Duran for fourth.
The Mids' youth was on display in the pommel horse event final as
Jonah Soltz (Fr., Tacoma, Wash.) and
Saran Alexander (Fr., Tavares, Fla.) each showcased their skills and came away with top-five results. The plebes were separated by just 0.05 points in fourth and fifth place with scores of 13.3 and 13.25, respectively. Soltz' team-best score was from a 4.6 start value and 8.7 execution grade.
Drake earned his second medal of the day and third of the USAG weekend with a fifth-place outcome on the vault. In an extremely competitive event final, first through eighth place was separated by just 0.65 points as William & Mary's Connor Barrow placed first with a score of 14.25. Drake was 0.3 points off of Barrow's pace as he came in fifth with a 13.95 effort. He was 0.1 points shy of Army's Nick Lester, who grabbed bronze for the event.
Daniel Gurevich (So., Frisco, Texas) was the second Midshipman in the finals of the vault; he placed eighth with a 13.6 score.
Prior to the start of Saturday's meet, Navy's coaching staff was recognized with a pair of awards as Kip Simons was honored as the USAG Coach of the Year, while Craig Holt and Ryan Terrill were bestowed the USAG Assistant Coaches of the Year prize. Additionally, Drake was given the award as USAG Senior Gymnast of the Year.
Navy will continue postseason action one week from today when Simpson College hosts the 2025 ECAC Championship. The conference-wide event is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) first touch on Saturday, April 5 at Simpson's Cowles Fieldhouse.
