Navy Races in Quartet of Grand Finals at Doc Hosea Invite

Mids’ V8 edged by Northeastern by 0.182 seconds in photo finish for third place

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Navy women's rowing team continued its early season action on Saturday with two sessions of racing at the 2025 Doc Hosea Invite. Navigating a 2,000-meter stretch of the Cooper River, the Mids had five boats competing on Saturday and saw four of those crews advance to grand finals.

The regional-heavy field consisted of 12 teams, including ranked squads, No. 9 Rutgers, No. 12 Penn, as well as fellow 2024 NCAA Championship teams, Northeastern and Rhode Island. Additionally, Navy got a chance to size up Patriot League rival Bucknell on the same course that both teams will race again in May at the 2025 Patriot League Championship.

"We had some moments and some not good moments today," remarked head coach Joe Schlosberg. "We have to learn from both in order to continue to find speed as the season progresses.

"In the morning session, we were able to get four of five boats into the grand finals. Last year we didn't advance any boats into grand finals, so that was an important step that needed to be achieved. In the second session, we were definitely frantic and spun our wheels. The Varsity 8 was able to work through that though, but just ran out of water in trying to track down Northeastern. Now, we have to lock in and continue to find more speed."

The Mids' first varsity eight paced the fleet on Saturday with two ultra-competitive results. In the morning's qualifying heat, Navy was edged in a photo finish by Rhode Island in a battle to the line for second place by 0.371 seconds, 6:42.398 to 6:42.769. Advancing into the grand final as one of the two fastest wild card boats (the top-two finishers in each heat earned automatic berths), Navy was involved in another photo finish, this time in a fight for third place with Northeastern. Down early to the Huskies, the Mids charged towards the finish line and came up feet short of completing the comeback with a minuscule, 0.182-second decision going the way of Northeastern, 6:36.560 to 6:36.742.

Navy's second varsity eight recorded the Mids' initial second place finish in heat racing as the crew sped down the Cooper River and bested fellow Patriot League foe, Bucknell, 6:51.488 to 6:52.507. The Mids and Bison found themselves in another back-and-forth contest in the grand final as they went stroke-for-stroke in a fight for fourth place. Close throughout the majority of the 2,000 meters, Bucknell held on and crossed 0.96 seconds ahead of Navy, 6:51.563 to 6:52.523.

The Mids' first varsity four made it back-to-back automatic grand final qualifications as they were strong throughout the morning session and clocked in at 7:43.950 to place second behind Rutgers (7:21.704) and in front of Drexel (7:45.187). In the V4 grand final, Navy struggled to re-create their initial performance and were forced to settle for fifth place as Drexel bested them 7:40.386 to 7:50.265.

Navy had a pair of entries in the second varsity four event. Coming out of the same heat, Navy 'B' earned the final wild card advancement with a time of 7:57.658, while its' 'A' boat pulled up down the stretch and crossed the finish line at 8:15.216. In the grand final, Navy 'B' completed its piece in sixth courtesy of an 8:02.226 mark. In the 2V4 petite final, Navy 'A' came in second of three crews with an 8:22.614 result.

Navy will be away from collegiate competition for three weeks before welcoming Georgetown on April 19 for a home regatta on the Severn River.
