ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team kept on rolling with its spring season this past weekend, hosting the Truxtun Umsted Regatta at home while also sending Midshipmen to the MAISA Women's Team Race Championship and the Owen Trophy.
The third conference championship of the spring season, the MAISA Women's Team Race Championship was hosted at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., as both days of racing saw shifty winds from the north and northwest. Saturday started out rainy and cold but got nicer in the afternoon, while Sunday was a gorgeous but chilly day in the Finger Lakes. Navy fought hard all weekend but let too many races slip away to stay in contention, as the Mids wound up sixth overall in the eight-team field with a 7-14 record. Navy's team consisted of skippers
Evie Blauvelt,
Ava Farley and
Kate Zurinskas with crews of
Eleanor Niehoff,
Mary Dwyer and
Josie Sherry, while the alternates were
Maggie Schuler and
Darby Dryden.
Held in St. Mary's City, Md., the Owen Trophy featured nine teams competing in weather similar to the conditions in western New York. Navy finished third overall after 18 races, with
Umi Noritake and
Eva Ottenbreit finishing fifth in the combined division while
George Carty and
Melania Gonzalez took eighth.
A perennial top regatta that draws a national field to Annapolis, this year's Truxtun Umsted was no different as 17 teams came to compete on the Severn. Navy took the lead in the regatta after race 1B and never looked back, cruising to a 20-point victory.
Tanner Kelly,
Spencer Dominguez and
Sarah McNelly finished third in the "A" division while
Kyle Reinecke and
Izzy Fadullon claimed the victory in the "B" division by a 26-point margin.
Up next for Navy are the America Trophy (MAISA Coed Championship) and the George Washington Invitational on April 19-20.
