Women’s Rugby Dominates New Haven to Place Seventh at 7s Collegiate Championship

BOYDS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team dominated New Haven, 30-0, in the seventh-place match at the 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship on Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.

The Mids fell in their first match of the day to Queens, 31-5, to set up a meeting with the Mustangs in the seventh-place contest.

"We had a rough time in our first game against Queens, but we got things sorted out for our match against New Haven," said head coach Murph McCarthy. "The CRCs is a great event. So much rugby in one place and the environment is fantastic. Our younger players getting to compete here is going to be key for us as we move forward."

Match Recaps
Queens 31, Navy 5
Navy opened the day in the first round of the Plate bracket where it squared off against Queens. It was the second time the two teams have faced each other this spring. The Royals previously defeated the Mids (12-10) at the Navy 7s.

Lara Olmsted started the match with a long run into the Queens' 22-meter zone in the opening minute. A Navy turnover for going out of bounds stalled the opening possession.

The Royals took advantage of the turnover to run the length of the field and score the first try of the match in the second minute.

Queens benefited off a pair of Mids' turnovers and added two more tries in the fourth and sixth minutes to extend its lead to 17-0.

Senior team captain Miracle Haynes found a gap in the Royals' defense and offloaded to Olmsted who ran in the try in the seventh minute to end the first half.

Queens controlled the second half as it scored two more tries and made both conversion kicks to finish off the match.

Navy 30, New Haven 0
The Mids scored their most points in the two-day tournament in the seventh-place match against New Haven. Navy spread the ball around as it ran in six tries from five different scorers.

The Mids pinned the Chargers deep in their territory on the opening kickoff. Navy's defense forced an early turnover in the second minute and Ella Callahan gathered the loose ball to run in the first try of the match.

Callahan cashed in a second try thanks to another New Haven miscue deep in its territory in the fourth minute for a quick 10-0 lead.

The Chargers fumbled the ball inside their 22-meter zone in the seventh minute where Olmsted scooped-and-scored her second try of the day.

The Mids' momentum carried over into the second half as Mia Young forced a turnover to run in her second try of the tournament in the 10th minute.

Navy's defense forced the fifth turnover inside New Haven's 22-meter zone for another try in the 12th minute. Ashley Spencer showed off her power as she shook off two defenders to run in the try.

Haynes got in on the scoring action for the Mids' final try of the match in the 13th minute.
