ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Norfolk State (12-9) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Navy men's tennis team (17-14) by the score of 4-3, Saturday at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis. Today's decision came one year after the Mids defeated the Spartans by the same score.
Navy took a 1-0 lead on the strength of winning matches at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
Norfolk State won the first match to finish, a 6-2 victory by Igor Kubalka and Frederick McRae over
Graydon Buckingham and
Zach Quattro at the No. 3 flight. Navy evened the proceedings when its No. 1 tandem of
Aniketh Ayinala and
Jason Kim defeated Vladislav Gorbatenko and Boris Lunin by the score of 6-3. The point went to the Mids when their team of
Tommy Kim and Steven Nguyen held off Deniz Okyay and Jakub Solarski, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles.
Ayinala then won a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Gorbatenko at No. 2 singles to give the Mids their 2-0 advantage. Norfolk State won the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead. Solarski defeated Etterbeek, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1, Okyay posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over
Tommy Kim at No. 3 and Kubalka defeated Nguyen, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
Jason Kim tied the score at 3-3 when he defeated McRae, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, at the No. 4 flight.
The Spartans won the match when Michele Elia edged
Aaron Gu, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), at No. 6 singles.
Navy will play two matches Sunday as it will play host to Longwood at 11 a.m. and play at Holy Cross at noon.
