Women’s Rugby Set to Compete at CRAA 7s Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team closes its season at the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) Women's 7s Premier National Championship this Friday and Saturday at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Day 1 / Pool B – Friday, March 2
10:58 a.m. – Lindenwood vs. Navy

3 p.m. – Sacred Heart vs. Navy

5:12 p.m. – Army vs. Navy

Day 2 – Saturday, March 3
9:22 a.m. – Cup Quarterfinals (top-eight teams advance)

1:02 p.m. – Plate Semifinals (cup quarterfinal losers)

2 p.m. – Cup Semifinals

2:44 p.m. – 5th Place and 7th Place Matches

3:28 p.m. – Bronze Final

4:56 p.m. – Cup Final

10:06 a.m. / 12:40 p.m. / 2:44 p.m. – 9th Place Round Robin Matches

Tournament Format
Teams will play matches within their pool on Friday.  The top-eight teams from the first day – first and second-place teams from each pool and the next two teams with the best record – will advance to the Cup quarterfinals on Saturday with place matches following. The remaining three teams will compete in round-robin matches for ninth place.

Navy History at the CRAA Championship
Navy will be competing in its first CRAA 7s National Championship as a varsity program.

Navy Notes
  • The Mids have posted a program-best 12 victories during the 7s season this spring.
  • Mia Young leads the team in tries (nine), conversion kicks (15) and total points (75) in 7s competition. She has scored at least one try in every tournament this season.
  • Ella Callahan (42 points), Hannah Brink (40) and Kyndall Wyngaard (40) have been vital scorers for the Mids. Callahan and Wyngaard are tied for the second-most tries (eight) this spring, while Brink has been an all-around scorer with four tries and 10 conversion kicks.
  • Navy split its four matches at the 7s College Rugby Championship (CRC) last weekend. The Mids defeated New Haven 30-0 in the seventh-place match to conclude the championship.

Scouting the Field
Harvard enters the tournament as the defending CRAA 7s National Champion. The Crimson has won three-consecutive national titles (Fall 15s – 2023; Spring 7s – 2024; Fall 15s – 2024).

The Mids faced two teams in their pool – Sacred Heart and Army – during the fall 15s season. The Midshipmen fell in both matches (Sacred Heart 53-19; Army 41-0). Navy will face Lindenwood for the first time as a varsity program.

Navy also lost to Harvard (74-7) and defeated Princeton (24-19) during the fall 15s season.  Additionally, the Mids lost to Long Island (28-7) and beat Princeton (17-10) during the spring 7s campaign.

Scouting Lindenwood
  • Lindenwood is led by 13th-year head coach Trevor Locke. Under his guidance, the Lions have won four CRAA 7s national championships (2018, '19, '21, '22).
  • Lindenwood enters the tournament with a 10-1 overall record. The Lions boasted a 6-1 record in the spring season highlighted by a 19-15 victory over Life in the CRAA D1A National Championship final.
  • Lindenwood finished in second place at last year's CRAA 7s National Championship. The Lions recorded a 4-2 record in the tournament with their only losses coming to Harvard (17-10; 17-12).

Scouting Sacred Heart
  • Sacred Heart has posted a 16-7 record in 7s competition through four tournaments.
  • The Pioneers concluded the regular season at the Rickerson Cup last weekend. Sacred Heart faced Princeton three times at the Rickerson Cup and won the first two matches (32-17, 64-0) but dropped the third (12-7).
  • The Pioneers compiled a 3-2 record in last year's CRAA 7s National Championship with victories over Penn State (31-7), LIU (24-7) and Life (17-14).

Scouting Army
  • Army has competed in three 7s tournaments this season (Crimson 7s, New Haven 7s and College Rugby Championship 7s).
  • The Black Knights finished in second place at the CRC 7s last weekend. Army defeated Mount St. Mary's (29-0), New Haven (41-7) and American International (15-5) before it fell to Brown (19-7) in the final.
  • The Mids will face the Black Knights in 7s competition for the second time as a varsity program. Army defeated Navy (27-0) at the Army / Royal Military College of Canada 7s last season.
