Men’s Team Posts Two Victories, Women’s Team One at Swimming & Diving Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for three victories this weekend at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis as part of a two-day, four-team dual meet.  The men's team (11-1) defeated Kenyon (290-63) and Delaware (266-87), the women's team (7-4) beat Kenyon (187.5-165.5), both teams lost to Princeton (women: 268-84, men: 201-151) and the women's team lost to Delaware (201-152).

Princeton's women's team (9-0) won all three of its meets, as did the Princeton men's team (8-0).  Delaware ended the weekend with two women's victories (5-3) and one win for the men's team (2-3).  The Kenyon men's (3-7) and women's (5-5) teams, which are ranked sixth and third nationally, respectively, on the NCAA Division III level, each lost all three meets.

The Navy men's team had either a first or second-place finisher in all eight of the swimming events contested Saturday.  The morning began with the 200 medley relay team posting a time of 1:25.49 to win the race.  That was followed by Patrick Kessler placing second in the 100 free with a clocking of 43.36.  Navy won the ensuing two races as Ben Irwin recorded the victory in the 200 back (1:42.01) and Juan Mora placed first in the 200 breast (1:55.03).

The Mids placed second in each of the remaining four races.  Chase Maier was the silver medalist in the 500 free (4:22.10), Irwin finished in second place in the 100 fly (47.53), Gio Aguirre placed second in the 200 IM (1:47.24) and Navy's 400 free relay team was the second to complete the last race of the meet (2:53.71).

The men's divers competed in the three-meter event today and leading the way for Navy was Finn Gelbach in fifth place (325.00).

"From the very start of the season, we knew this meet was going to be an extremely competitive challenge for us," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts.  "I felt our team did a terrific job putting themselves in a position to compete with a ranked program in Princeton (22nd).  We had some excellent moments and performances throughout, and were very happy with the way our team handled the high-level competition.  In addition to gaining a ton of valuable racing and diving experience in getting ready for championships, it was a fun and exciting two days with these four programs.  It had a championship meet feel to it both days.

"Individually, Juan Mora was outstanding in both sessions.  He was absolutely dominant in his events against terrific competition."

Lauren Walsh and Sarah Eldridge were the top finishers for the Navy women's team on Saturday.  Walsh placed third in the 200 breast (2:15.99) and Eldridge was the third-place swimmer in the 500 free (4:54.51).  Walsh also finished in fifth place in the 200 IM (2:03.89).  Erin Miller led the Navy swimmers in the 100 free as she placed fifth (51.16), Allie Maloney finished in sixth place in the 200 back (2:02.91) and Clarice Spencer recorded a seventh-place effort in the 100 fly (56.09).

Additionally, Mackenzie Kim scored 237.95 points to place fifth on the one-meter diving board, and Navy's relay teams finished in fourth place in the 200 medley and sixth place in the 400 free events.

The men's team will next be in competition Jan. 23 at Columbia and the women's team will next compete Jan. 24 at James Madison.
