ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With a 5-0 individual record for the spring so far, Navy freshman
Nicole Fu has been named the Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The rookie has been instrumental in the Midshipmen rattling off a 4-0 start to the spring dual season, with Fu going 3-0 in singles play while partnering with junior
Olivia Fermo for a pair of doubles wins.
Fu kicked off the spring two weeks ago by teaming with Fermo for a 6-0 doubles victory over St. Bonaventure's No. 2 pairing of Sienna Smith and Kashish Bote in the spring opener, before posting a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Saint Francis' Kelly Dowuona in the Jan. 17 nightcap.
The freshman continued her impressive spring start this past week, garnering a pair of victories in the Mids' Friday win over Richmond and then notching a singles victory to help Navy defeat Morgan State on Saturday. Playing No. 1 doubles with Fermo, the Navy duo knocked off a Spiders pairing in Sofia Barbulescu and Lara Bakhaya that ranked top-10 in the Atlantic region last year, 6-4, while Fu then upended Richmond's Elizabeth Novak in a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 decision on the No. 3 singles court right after. Fu finished the weekend by rolling past Morgan State's Julia Jeffrey, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match on Saturday.
Fu has now won her last four singles matches dating back to the fall, while Fermo and Fu have now won three consecutive doubles matches together.
The award marks Fu's first weekly honor of her career and the Mids' first weekly accolade of the season. The last Navy player to win the league's weekly honor was
Emily Tannenbaum on April 15, 2025.
Navy looks to remain undefeated when it heads to South Bend, Ind., this weekend, facing Notre Dame on Saturday before playing Ball State Sunday morning.
