Ten Tries Power No. 1 Navy Rugby Past No. 12 Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The top-ranked Navy men's rugby team (7-0, 5-0 Rugby East) rolled to a 62-10 road victory over No. 12 Mount St. Mary's (1-4, 1-3 Rugby East) on Saturday afternoon. The performance marked the fifth time the Midshipmen have eclipsed 50 points this fall and their third game recording 10 or more tries.

"Today was an important day to test our standards throughout our squad," Navy director of rugby Gavin Hickie said. "We mixed things up a little and came away with a good performance and great result."

Kade Williams led Navy in scoring with 12 points, connecting on six conversion kicks. Liam Gray and Connor Scott also paced the offense with 10 points apiece, each touching down for a pair of tries.

The Midshipmen controlled the match from the opening whistle, taking a 7-0 lead when Gray crossed the try zone at the 8:37 mark and Williams hit his first conversion. Sean Donohue followed with a try in the 13th minute and Hutch Coward added another at 19:27.

Scott then broke through to score the first try of his career at 25:10. Williams converted all four early kicks to build a commanding 28-0 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's got on the board with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

Jake Cornelius answered minutes later with a try at the 40-minute mark. Williams' fifth conversion sent Navy into the halftime break with a 35-3 lead.

Navy's offensive momentum carried right into the second half when Maximus Buono scored at the 45th-minute mark, followed by Williams' final conversion of the afternoon.

Trevor Gayron extended the margin in the 52nd minute and Scott secured his second try of the match at 58:00. Jude Ballinger (66:30) and Gray (70:50) capped off the Mids' scoring sequence to make it 62-3.

The Mountaineers managed a late try and conversion in the 73rd minute to finalize the score.

Navy returns home next Saturday when it takes on No. 7 Saint Mary's at 11 a.m. at the Prusmack Rugby Center.
