BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior
Dane Eike secured a top-10 individual finish to lead the Navy men's cross country team to a fourth-place overall finish at the Paul Short Run's College Gold 8K at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on Friday, Oct. 2. Competing in a field of 35 scoring programs, Eike established himself at the front of the pack and crossed the finish line in 24:15.8 to capture 10th place among the 302 competitors that finished the 8K event.
Penn State's Nick Sloff won the individual race in 23:59.8, while Wingate took the overall team title with 58 points.
"There was a chance to make a statement today as a team, but we dug a huge hole as soon as the race started," head coach
Aaron Lanzel said after the race. "First quarter mile we positioned poorly, and then there is a sea of bodies in your way. Heroic efforts ensued the last few miles, but while the front runners could relax and cruise as the day got hotter, we were left to go beyond the redline to make up some of the difference. The capabilities our team has is apparent, but the only measure that really matters is getting it to the finish line first. Some clear corrections and lessons to improve championship results in weeks to come."
Behind Eike's standout performance, the Midshipmen compiled 193 total points and maintained a strong pack with a 1:04.4 spread among their top five runners and an average finishing time of 24:48.0.

"Dane was solid," Lanzel added. "He's a proven contender in any race. James has made the jump this season to a new level with Luke. We have a pack that can be tight with them. It's October, so its time they put it together. We also had some good success seeing the future with some of our freshman in the open race. Dominic ran a measured and solid race start to finish. Liam is improving really well through the season. And Jace was bold and showed his unquestionable competitiveness."
