Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Navy Outlasts Colgate in Overtime

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Jordan Pennick's 22 points paced five players in double figures as the Navy men's basketball team battled its way past Colgate, 84-40 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.  The win gives Navy (21-6, 14-1) a three-game lead on second-place Colgate (16-11, 10-4) with four games remaining in the regular season.

The two teams will play again on Feb. 28 in Annapolis on the last day of the season.

The result ends a 13-game losing streak by Navy to Colgate (last win was Jan. 3, 2019) and was the first victory by the Mids over the Raiders in Hamilton in a decade (had lost 10 in a row).

"Just a hard-fought game," said Navy head coach Jon Perry.  "Two really good teams going at each other.  We have a lot of respect for (Colgate head coach) Matt Langel and everything he has built at Colgate.  I thought they had some resilience in the second half.  I'm just proud of our team.  A lot of guys stepped up in a lot of different ways to make plays, whether it be big rebounds, free throws made, three-pointers; we had a couple of guys who were really good for us defensively especially in the second half."

The Mids used a 12-3 run to take a 19-9 lead, then built a 25-11 advantage with 9:18 left in the half.  The Navy lead was 27-18 when a 9-0 run extended the cushion to 36-18 with just over four minutes showing on the clock.  The Raiders quickly answered with an 8-0 run (36-26) before the teams traded scores over the remainder of the half. Navy went into the break holding a 40-28 advantage.

Colgate was 4-13 in its two-point attempts and 6-12 in its three-point tries in the first half.  The Raiders entered the game averaging 7.1 three-point baskets made a game this season.  Navy made five triples in the first half, three of which came from Pennick as he scored 11 points in the first half.

After scoring 28 points in the first 20 minutes of the game, Colgate needed 10 minutes to score 28 points at the start of the second half.  Jalen Cox accounted for 15 of those points as the Raiders took their first lead of the game at 56-55 with 10:03 left on the clock.

That was the first of seven lead changes over the next three minutes.  An eighth change occurred when Pennick hit a triple to give the Mids a 67-64 lead with 5:30 showing on the clock.  Colgate then took a 70-69 lead, which was immediately followed by Aidan Kehoe scoring on the other end to make it a 71-70 Navy lead with 3:35 left to play.

Kehoe then recorded a steal and was fouled.  He made one of his two foul shots with 3:07 remaining.  Cox then missed a shot with the Mids grabbing the defensive board.  Navy gave the ball to Austin Benigni, who scored on a driving layup to give Navy a 74-70 lead with 2:33 left to play.

Draper was called for a foul on the other end, which sent Andrew Alekseyenko to the free throw line.  He missed the front end of the bonus and Draper grabbed the carom.  Pennick missed a three-point shot with just under two minutes left, with Colgate picking up the loose ball.  Draper soon was whistled for a foul with 91 seconds still to play.  His fifth foul of the game sent Ayomi Odetoyinbo to the charity stripe.  He missed the first shot but made the second to draw the Raiders to within 74-71.

Cox picked off a Navy pass and went a little more than half of the court to score and make it a 74-73 game with 1:11 remaining.  Pennick answered on the other end with his sixth three-point basket of the afternoon to stretch the margin to 77-73 with 51.7 seconds left.  Cox promptly hit a jumper to slice the margin in half with 44.9 seconds still to play, with Colgate calling timeout after the basket.

Navy took its time on the ensuing possession.  Cam Cole eventually drove toward the basket late in the shot clock and his attempt was blocked by Odetoyinbo with 15 seconds left.  Colgate gave the ball to Cox and he was fouled with 8.9 seconds left on the clock.  He made both foul shots to tie the game, with Navy calling timeout afterward.

No surprise, the ball stayed in Benigni's hands and he weaved his way down the court and through the paint before trying a short off-balanced and challenged jumper that didn't miss the mark by much as time expired.

"Controlling the controllables," said Perry about how the Mids bounced back after Colgate's strong start to the second half.  "It is our attitude, our effort, our response to that run.  It takes time to develop that.  We have an older group with seniors and juniors who are playing a lot of heavy minutes for us.  The guys are confident. We didn't waver and didn't blink.  I think we settled down a bit in transition defense and keeping Cox out of the paint.  And we started to take care of the ball a little better."

The last time Navy and Colgate went to overtime was Jan. 9, 2016, when the Mids defeated the Raiders by the score of 71-68.  Coincidentally, that was the last time a Navy team defeated Colgate in a game played in Hamilton.

The teams would combine for 1-10 shooting from the floor in the extra frame, with the lone field goal coming from Pennick 40 seconds into the overtime to give Navy a 79-77 lead.

Colgate made one free throw, Navy missed a shot and the Raiders made another foul shot to tie the game at 79-79 with 2:32 still to play.  Both teams missed field goal attempts, then the Raiders missed another with Cole grabbing the defensive rebound.  Benigni would eventually be fouled with 1:34 remaining.  Perhaps a little dazed from the contact, the career 86 percent free throw shooter made the first attempt but missed the second to make it an 80-79 lead.

The Raiders had another empty possession, with Kehoe grabbing an errant Colgate shot with one minute remaining.  Navy again was patient and eventually the ball returned to Benigni late in the shot clock. He had a good look at a three-point basket, but missed and Colgate grabbed the board, advanced the ball over halfcourt and called timeout with 27.1 seconds on the game clock and 24 on the shot clock.

Navy played solid defense to force Colgate to wait for a clean shot.  Alekseyenko took a three-point shot that missed, with Benigni racing through traffic to grab the loose ball and be fouled with 6.0 seconds remaining.  He walked to the other end of the floor and made both free throws to give Navy an 82-79 lead.

Colgate inbounded the ball to Cox, who was immediately fouled with 5.2 seconds left so as to keep him from trying a three-point shot.  He made the first shot and missed the second.  Kehoe got his hands on the rebound and batted it to Benigni who was fouled while trying for the ball with 2.5 seconds left.

Benigni made both free throws to account for the final points of the game.

"It is a comforting luxury to be able to place the ball in the hands of someone like Austin down the stretch of games," said Perry.  "He gets us into our offense, settles us down and can draw fouls. He has seen a lot over his four years and gives us a good chance with the ball late in games."

Navy was 1-6 from the field and missed all four of its three-point attempts in overtime while Colgate was 0-4 from the field and misfired on its only attempt from long range.  The Mids were 5-6 from the foul line and the Raiders were 3-6.

Both teams had roughly the same field goal percentage in the game (49.1% for Navy, 48.1% for Colgate).  The Mids were 8-21 (38.1%) from three-point range and the Raiders were 11-23 (47.8%) to finish one triple shy of tying their season high of 12.  Navy was 20-29 (69%) from the foul line and Colgate was 17-26 (65.4%).

Each team had eight offensive and 26 defensive rebounds while Navy committed 10 turnovers (three after halftime) and Colgate turned the ball over 12 times (four half halftime).  Navy held leads of 17-14 in points after turnovers, 30-24 in points in the paint, 15-11 in fast break points and 25-14 in bench points.  Colgate won the second-chance points statistic, 11-7.

Pennick finished with 22 points and his six triples was one shy of tying a career high.  Draper was 6-9 from the floor and 8-9 from the foul line in scoring 20 points to go along with grabbing eight rebounds and swiping three steals.  Kehoe recorded his 14th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while also contributing four assists and two steals.  Also, Benigni tallied 13 points and five assists and Jinwoo Kim scored 10 points.

"I thought our offense was good today," said Perry.  "They (Colgate) played more zone than we have seen.  Our guys did a great job against it.  Jordan made some timely threes.  Cam Cole had some really good looks, Jinwoo Kim was 2-2 from three, and Draper had another big game.  I know he fouled out and we missed him down the stretch, but he did a great job on both ends of the floor."

Cox led all players with 30 points and seven assists.  He scored 22 points in the second half and one in overtime.

Navy will be back in Alumni Hall Wednesday night when it plays host to Lehigh.
